I first encountered this conundrum in the College of Education's computer lab, sitting down and trying the old Ctrl+Fan+Escape or whatever it was combo I used on my childhood PowerMac, but to no avail. I then took a quick glance around, realized that I couldn't figure out something that education-majoring Macintosh users could, and ran away embarrassed. One year later, my research lab has purchased an iMac for us and I still don't know how to turn it on. I found this video (which was eerily close to my own attempts) and see most people saying "On the back", but where? Do you see a power button here? I thought Apple was retard-friendly.

I did not see that; thanks. I think I spent most of my time looking at the right side, since there isn't enough room to put my head around the other way. And I'm used to power buttons being on the right sides of things, so I did most of my groping there. Steve Jobs was probably left handed, the fucker.

lol. I spent thirty minutes Googling it yesterday, and every time I would hear the code to the room being punched, my heartbeat would soar as I reached for the red circle with a trembling hand. It really is quite demoralizing.

I still don't see a good reason why it shouldn't be on the side. The right side.

I don't look at the side. If the back is asymmetrical, why can't the side be? They put volume buttons on the side of the iPhone 4.

Anyway, the button doesn't even have to bulge-out. It can be flush with the side, but still visible if you're looking for it. Bad design, IMO. I guess they don't crash or need to shut down very often and you usually won't have to look for the pwr button.

I wonder if there's a way to power-on from the keyboard?
