This winter is already worse than last winter and it isn't even winter yet!

2 huge atmospheric rivers here in the Bay Area already (usually we don't get more than one, if any) and another due in 2 days. It's colder the last few days than I think it got all last winter. Who knows what's coming? Oh, omicron, that's right, Michael Osterholm says that's going to be "a blizzard."

Hell, some of the weather websites are even predicting a chance of snow for us here on the coast.

I will now bore you with my lame-ass meteorological predictions.

As the arctic warms and the jet stream weakens, the West coast will see increasing dips in the JS and bring with it rain, cold and wind. That's actually a danger for the whole lower 48 but the West seems to be the tip of the tongue in tossing mama nature's salad.

Meanwhile, here on the East coast, the AMOC (North Atlantic saline conveyor currents) will continue to degrade resulting in warm water pooling near the Northern coast. I wasn't sure what the effect of that would be but my guess now is that 2 things will start to happen more often. Either hurricanes will get diverted to the gulf or redirected out to sea and toward Northern Europe. Those days of balmy sea breezes that give the cliffs of Albion warmer, wetter weather than what you Brits deserve are over . . . OVER I say.

While the North Atlantic states will gradually begin to have those sorts of winters.

edit: I'm sure my paternal ancestors saw that coming when the emigrated here almost 400 years ago.

Haha, had you going there for a split second?

Ready for the next Texas freeze which inevitably kills the power grid.

I is envy.

I want one of those so bad but I just can't justify the (for me) astronomical cost when we have maybe one or two fairly brief power outages per year. My pharmacy got one installed on their back, let's call it a porch/loading dock, after Sandy. I look lovingly at it every I go in from the back parking lot.
75 in SC yesterday. Got a bike ride in so win.
Blah, blah.

Have fun but may you have a slow leaking tire you don't notice until you're struggling to get up that last hill. Do you even have hills down there?

1 lost freezer of food should just about justify it.

Our house is all electric, hot water, cooking, heat, etc. We'd need at least a 24kW genset tofully power the house. Those things use around 4 gallons of propane per hour...@$2.99/gallon. I opted for a 3650 watt generator to run the bare essentials. (Pellet stove, lights, refrigerator, even cable modem, PC's, Dish box and TV.

Lies, you must have seen someone with a maga hat.

Those are "speshul snowflakes." Muse lives in Berzerkely...those are as uncommon there as regular snowflakes.

Weather still hasn't been relatively bad here for temps (on Lake Michigan), but we still have nasty winds regularly. Few days ago it was 30+ mph sustained and gusting to 70+. That's not rare here, but the other day there were multidirectional winds. I had some well-formed leaf-devils swirling outside my apartment.

There was also (unconnected) at least one or more tornadoes in another part of the state; I didn't even know that was possible in such low temperatures (40-50F). I suppose colliding pressure fronts can have strong effects in any temperatures.

So far we had more snow this year than all of last year. This winter feels like a normal childhood winter tbh... except for that weird heat wave we had a few days ago. Lot of the snow melted and everything got super crappy. It's back to being normal cold though at least.

I need to take a drive to my property some time to see if they actually plow that road or not. If they do, I can probably start exploring to find a place to build, then start clearing some trees. Better doing that kind of work in winter when there's no bugs and it's not as hot to work in.

Whomever is spying on me (is "whom" also plural? "Whoms" perhaps? Don't make me go NJ on your ass and start saying youz. Ptah, ptah. Never!!! Back to your regularly scheduled post) managed to stuff a Generac solar ad on one of my shopping tabs. Yes, solar. Didn't click but if you do a little searchy, searchy, I won't tell.

There's not much call for solar here. No rebate or power buy-back programs from the PUD, and we have more gray days than sunny ones. I mean...it would work...somewhat, but it would take forever to pay for itself.
Edit...there might be a buy-back program...but I can't find the info. (and since I'm not going to do it anyway...not gonna go chase it)

Honestly I'm surprised solar is not taking off more. Though maybe it's a good thing because if it does the government will regulate it more. There's already places that do in fact regulate it such as California (need to pay extra fees to the hydro company if you have solar panels) and Florida (not allowed to use solar if power goes out) and even in PEI (you get taxed on production).

Even here in the north solar works decently, with the only downfall being our days are so short, so you do need big batteries. My setup is not ideal because I don't have much room to put a proper setup but it does work. Will get to experiment more with it on my off grid property when I start to build that up more. I already have 2 380w panels that I got for a good price. It's tempting to put those somewhere on my property to extend my existing setup, but I may as well put it towards the new property.

You probably get a bit more sun than we do here...

On average, there are 126 sunny days per year in Ocean Shores (zip 98569). The US average is 205 sunny days.

Ocean Shores (zip 98569) gets some kind of precipitation, on average, 193 days per year.

Are you saying I'm Nature and therefore have the ultimate authority over everything? Cuz I'd shuck Kookifornia off into the ocean today.
