Slow down, the chance of quality BTX and DDR 2 stuff coming out first year / first editions is very rare compared to their huge price tags.

Probably when the barrage of new games come out (Half-Life 2, Doom 3, etc.), I'll build a whole new system. Hopefully the Athlon 64's will drop significantly in price

Yea, I know. I guess I didn't write all of my thoughts. I had originally planned on getting a socket 939 board, then I realized how many new technologies were going to be coming out, and my final decision was that I'll hold out on everything but a socket 939 board and an A64 (no DDR2, BTX, PCI Express). I'm sure the new 939 platform will be buggy enough, so I don't even wanna throw in the new DDR2 and PCI Express standards with that. It'd probably be a nightmare. I'm hoping to get the socket 939 board + A64 along with an Audigy 2 and a SATA hd this year. Then sometime in mid 2005, or whenever the new platforms have matured enough (stability and price/performance ratio)and they start making nice BTX cases -- something that can compare to my black, aluminum Chieftec Dragon w/side panel window & a cold cathode, I'll make a big upgrade. Longhorn should be out then, so I bet I'll give that a shot.

R420 on PCI Express

Socket-775 Prescotts with Alderwood mobos and DDR-2 ram



Next upgrade will probably be a 72GB Raptor. Haven't felt the need for a DVD burner yet, but they're so cheap I think I'll get one soon. I also want a nice LCD... Dammit I need more money!

just bought an a64 3000 + k8v which should be in the mail by friday, and my video card + psu was purchased recently, only upgrades i'm looking at for the rest of the year are maybe some ram that can run tighter timings, an SATA drive, maybe RAID...... around this time next year I might switch over to BTX/939/R420 if the price is right and it's available, otherwise i think i'll be set for a while with current sys by the weekend

The R420 is the codename for ATI's upcoming video card. It's supposedly VERY fast. PCI Express is the new motherboard slot, and the PCI Express 16x slot will replace AGP slots. It's also theoretically much quicker. ATI's R420 will be released in both AGP and PCI Express versions.

Developers have finally stepped up to stress PC hardware this year without a doubt. The new era of graphic engines are here.

But I all ready made my big upgrade for this year. Just waiting on the new Video cards.

These are the reasons I need to upgrade, or I mean get a whole new desktop; the p3 1gb laptop just isn't doing it at all any more. I am waiting to see how the a64 3700 in 939 pin form will perform, and how the pci express does, because right now these are what I am waiting for. The R420, or I think it's the R423 for the pci express, will most likely manage it's way into my new system. DDR2 will not be any faster than the current DDR until late this year, which is too late for me. If none of this turnes out to be much faster before Doom3 and HL2 come out, then I will get a a64 3400 in 754 pin and either a 9800 pro or xt, and maybe a raptor. TOO MANY DECISIONS!

I personally do not plan on upgrading at all this year! Right now I have a very decent system, and I think I can go 2 years without upgrading...maybe more. Only possible upgrade would be with my video card...if they still make AGP model cards.
