Thorton is a barton with the extra 256kb L2 burned out, you can reactivate the L2 turning into a Barton with some conductive material.

try with a 2000+ thorton better, or you need a mobo that can unlock the multiplier. My 2400+ runs at 133x15 @ 2.0ghz regularly and its hard for me to OC w/o a mobo that unlocks the multiplier.

Remember that these are VERY likely to be permanently multiplier locked, most chips made after week 39 are and even the sample image @ newegg shows well past week 40.

A thorton isn't like the applebred (Duron), except they both have disabled L2 cache. The applebred is a downsized t-bred, the thorton is a barton, which is a better chip than the t-bred. So with the duron you can get 256k L2 if you reenable it, 512K L2 if you renable it on the thorton, plus the thorton is already made to run higher speeds than the duron. Have people been getting these (Thortons from this thread) locked from newegg? I had heard the durons and XP 2500+s had been.

thorntons shouldnt be compared to durons since durons only have 128kb l2

they should be compared to tbred-b's, if anything (dont know if they perform better, but should perform exact)

i have a 2000+ (1667mhz) thorton (12.5 x 133) and just bumped the fsb to 166, == 12.5 x 166 = 2083mhz no vcore increase at all

no, durons have 128KB of L1 cache and 64KB of L2 cache. and of course they perform worse than tbred (128KB L1, 256KB L2) compared to same mhz.

Price is relative to many things. In the case of Thorntons they have a niche in countries where $20 means a weeks wages.

You can tell the year and week as the 4 numbers after the stepping. The first two numbers (usually 03 now) are the year and the next two are the week. If it's after week 39 then the last 2 of the numbers will say 39 or higher.
