I don't know much about weapons, but if they ban automatic and semi-auto rifles what's left? Muzzle loaders, bolt action? When will we see a musket massacre?

dont forget revolvers. but in any event, I doubt any od those would be used because of 1) lack of speed and 2) lack of "cool factor"

ARs are cool because the military uses them. the same way a high powered car or race-replica appeals to car people. at least that's my 0.02.

So when every item deemed to cause mass casualty is banned what will get blamed? Will we finally as a society start to address the issue at hand? When will it be realized that the weapons are not the issue? Since the dawn of man we have been killing each other and it will not stop until humans no longer live on this planet.

Get it over with, ban everything, then when the next mass shooting happens I want everyone to finally discuss the real issues.

If NZ followed the 911 template, they'd have to invade the country next-door to the one the killer came from. Which would be, er...New Zealand. So it's not surprising they found another option.

That said - are we _sure_ they've banned semi-auto rifles already? Last I heard the PM had declared her intention to accomplish that, but surely there are a lot more steps to get through before it actually happens?
We could always invade Samoa again.

There is currently no formal policy outlined. Cabinet has unanimously voted to address firearms regulation as a matter of urgency. The policy will be outlined within the next week. I assume that New Zealand will follow Australia's lead following the Port Arthur Massacre and ban all semi automatic firearms.

There has been a historical resistance to firearm regulation in New Zealand from the hunting and farming lobbies and urban New Zealanders have never really had a impetus to push for more regulation. This incident will definitely change public sentiment which is a shame because it could be foreseen.

Handguns are already essentially banned outside of shooting ranges in New Zealand. Unlike rifles and shotguns they aren't especially useful for hunting or livestock euthanasia.

We are not going to do anything about gun deaths in our nation, we're just going to let the killings go on and on because we are constitutionally locked when it comes to guns. It will stay this way with the bodies piling up until we have a shooting incident that is so horrendous that a majority of the public demands that things change and votes out the people who refuse to do anything.

Too many people in our nation think our 2nd Amendment is worth far more than the innocent lives lost to it.

If we were serious about gun deaths we would stop the war on drugs stat. Not fixate on a weapon that accounts for under 2% of gun deaths.

By your logic you should be in favor of hand grenades for every man woman and child because hand grenades are the issue since people have been killing each other since the dawn of man.

Many diseases are not curable but can be treated and managed with remedies. Ovarian cancer can't be cured but the treatments can keep a person alive for 10 years longer than no treatment. We can't cure chronic myelogenous leukemia but if you take gleevec you can basically live a near normal life as long as you take the meds. By your logic however, it's not even worth treating because the problem hasn't been cured. Yeah right.

Stop moving the goal posts. Society is allowed to deal with multiple problems at once. You can't be going to jail for a DUI and pose a credible argument that because there are murderers and thieves out there the cops shouldn't be arresting you.

The fact of the matter is many states by law find sparklers and fireworks to be more dangerous than guns. Its harder to buy a car in general than it is to buy a gun. This is entirely insane and not the result of natural logical decision making and normal market forces but the result of decades of pressure from special interests.

It is almost like our endless wars and glorifying the military for the past 20 years has consequences at home. Interesting fact. The AR-15 has been available since the 1960s. It took until the 2000s before it became a more common weapon in mass shootings. I believes it first use in a mass shooting was in 2008.

How can the next mass shooting happen if guns are banned?

How can a shooter use high capacity magazines if they are banned?

That is hardly moving the goalposts. The war on drugs and its subsequent turf wars are the source of the symptom of a large part of our gun violence. Treat the disease not the symptom as you like that metaphor.

Fun fact, you will find plenty of illegal fireworks in states that ban them. And no, it isnt easier to buy a gun than a car. At least legally. When was the last time you bought a gun?

Please drop the simplistic mindset. It's entirely possible to have restrictions on weapons while addressing other issues at the same time, and you don't need total restrictions to have a meaningful impact. For example: it's logical to argue that weapons designed to kill humans en masse have no business in the hands of people who only want guns for self-defense or hunting. Yes, you can still kill multiple people with a pistol or a shotgun, but those at least have practical uses -- and we don't need to make it easy for mass murders by handing them a semi-auto rifle with a large magazine.

Do you pose this question in relation to the Christchurch shooting? If so, high capacity magazines are not banned in New Zealand. When sold attached to a semi automatic rifle, such as an AR15 (Category A firearm), they require a higher, Category E, firearms licence. However, a loophole in the law means you can purchase the magazines separately without a Category E licence.

I tried prayers. How do we know if it worked?

I'd wager the Muslims who lost loved ones have put considerable effort into prayers. Perhaps we should disparage them as well.

Exactly my point. If you ban them, they can't be used readily. You may only prevent 90% of mass murderers from getting them, but thats still a nice start. Again, I bring up my analogy for the treatment of incurable diseases with treatments that significantly lower their long term harms.

That is hardly moving the goalposts. The war on drugs and its subsequent turf wars are the source of the symptom of a large part of our gun violence. Treat the disease not the symptom as you like that metaphor.

Yes but we're not seeing mass house burnings weekly or eye maimings or large numbers of hospitalization from burns from illegally acquired banned fireworks meaning the ban is probably working even if some people are illegal acquiring them secretly.

The position we've reached in the US about guns isn't one of natural means or a natural conclusion but one arrived through the effect of decades of special interests. This is self-obvious.

Also I call it's way harder to legally buy a car than a gun. I just bought a new car and the dealership asked for all but my colonoscopy records. To buy a car you have to at least show a drivers license and car insurance at minimum and then have to go through state registration of the car which involves a background check so you're not on some wanted killer list. Even if you buy a car off-hand from a private owner in order to register it for legal use you still need to go down and do a title exchange and then go through the registration process which requires insurance verification and other stuff. Again, its much harder to buy a car especially if it's a new car from a licensed dealer.

Drugs have nothing to do with gun violence in america. Very few people are being killed by guns for drugs or in relation to drugs in the US. Very few.

How many mass shootings in Australia since they banned semi-automatics?
