Those mega floating malls, how do you evacuate 8000 people?

Regarding the anthem of the seas caught in a storm, what if all the ozypods have failed and the ship started taking on water? How would you evacuate so many people from a floating mall?

The largest ones can hold up to 8000 people. These top heavy crowded ships look like a deathtrap waiting to happen.

Despite the large superstructure, the center of mass of modern cruise ships is relatively low. This is due to large open spaces and the extensive use of aluminium, high-strength steel and other lightweight materials in the upper parts, and the fact that the heaviest components — engines, propellers, fuel tanks and such — are located in the lower parts of the ship. Thus, even though modern cruise ships may appear top-heavy, proper weight distribution ensures they are not. Furthermore, large cruise ships also tend to be very wide, which considerably increases their initial stability by increasing the metacentric height.

Although most passenger ships utilize stabilizers to reduce rolling in heavy weather, they are only used for crew and passenger comfort and do not contribute to the overall intact stability of the vessel. The ships must fulfill all stability requirements even with the stabilizer fins retracted.

They look top heavy but are surprisingly stable.

As for evac, I imagine they have some pretty well thought out procedures and crew training, but I imagine it's one of those things you just hope you never actually have to use that training. That Costa Concordia ship had quite a lot of issues with evacuation despite not actually being sinking completely, just the fact that it was on it's side made the whole process really hard.

The Concordia was a mess because the captain was a tool and caused it to begin with showing off when he shouldn't have been near where he was.

Besides the people the idiot killed, it took 1.5 billion just to clean up the mess up later, 3X the ships cost.

Modern cruise ships you are never going to leave port without the prerequisite mandatory lifeboat drill before you ever leave port. Everyone is supposed to know their muster areas.

Not like it is likely to go exactly that way in a real emergency, but they have enough enclosed life boats to fit everyone in theory.

So how long would it take to evacuate and get 8000 people into lifeboats?

Can they do it in 30 minutes? That is what maritime regulations require.

Why are you worried about it ?

I guess you shouldn't be, doesn't sound like you have a cruise planned in the future.

You can do it in 10 minutes, but that would be ideal conditions.

I guess jet airliners should be grounded as they do not have lifeboats.
