Those of you who go to quarter system schools(not semesters) and are Comp Sci Majors.

How many comp sci classes would you recommend to someone to take at most at one time in a term? 2? 3? 4? 5? Just in general that is. I've heard 2 from one source.

Take however many you're comfortable with taking. Your school DOES have an add/drop period, right?

You know that shit is deceiving. >.> The shitstorm of work doesn't usually happen until after the free to add/drop without consequences time... In my experience anyway, and I am no good judge of whether the workload will be too much or like "Psh, eaaaaasssyyy!"

This.

Depends on your capability to stay on top of it all efficiently. If you can keep up with 3 or more, that's great, you will graduate on time or sooner.
I had started off doing 3, I did OK at first before I began having troubles. At 3 I was doing either mediocre c's & d's, or I was getting a's & b's but completely bombing the 3rd class. So I eventually went down to 2 and was able to keep my grades up after that, no more academic probation!
Depends on teachers and coursework for any given class... I've had some classes where ALL assignments were wrapped up into class discussion/groupwork. Other classes where it was just heavy studying and assignments..

It'll vary when you're a frosh/soph vs. upperclassman. I recommend seeing a counselor and drafting a four or five-year plan and that should give you a good idea of what a typical CS major takes at your school.

In your first two years, you'll have a healthy mix of your general ed. classes, so maybe 2 CS per quarter. As you finish up with your GE's, you'll be more focused on your major and taking more toward it. Not all CS classes will be coding and projects. I had technical writing, human computer interaction, society and computing, etc. You'll also have a bunch of math to take as well.

:epicdragontears: that's not... going to be me.. Sadly... I have a lot of my general ed done because I've been at a CC that doesn't offer ANY computer science classes that transfer except ONE. ONE.... ONE... Oh, and math will be done too most likely.

How is that a bad thing? You get to skip all of the non-relevant bullshit. In my country no universities require you to take shit that isn't related to your degree. Want a CS degree? As long as you take enough CS and maths (with a couple of non-CS science papers) then you're good to go.

In Soviet.. oh, New Zealand... Well, that's not here.

It's a bad thing because from what I've heard... Taking 2 computer science classes is the recommended max unless YOU KNOW you are capable of doing more. (And I don't KNOW if I am capable) That's why. It's a bad thing because I am on a bit of a time constraint as soon as I transfer to school.

In my experience you'll be amazed at what you can achieve if you're willing to work hard. Being able to take a large workload on has less to do with how smart/capable you are and more to do with how much work you're willing to put in.

As an undergrad I was in the same boat. A lot of CS (as well as other engineering students) would spread their GEs out over a number of quarters to avoid taking too many heavy duty CS classes at once. I didn't have that option since I took it all at my CC.

The classes you mainly do NOT want to take at the same time are programming classes. At least this was the case at my university. The programming assignments of just 1 class take up a good chunk of your time, let alone 2 programming classes.

It's not so much that for me as much as it is just having the drive to do that much work. Like, I can manage my time 100% if I wanted... It's a matter of whether I have the god damn drive to be like, "Hell yea. As soon as I get home from class I am going to fucking open the books and read some more and then do some programming and then read some more and some more and some more and some more and some more and some more and some more and some more..." Like, I just don't have that kind of personality I guess. It takes some serious whoa-powar to do that shit.

I'm in my final year of a CS degree. I spend many, many hours outside of class time either in the lab or at my desk or at the library. If you want to study CS (or any science or engineering) then be prepared to spend personal time working, a lot. Especially in the last year or two.

I'm not a CS major:

Don't programing courses need to be taken in some sort of order? Like right now im in Intro to IS which is SAP - Alice - Java, my next programing course is ADV Java

I'd have like 5 hours a day at most to work on homework/study on the weekdays when I transfer if anything goes like what I hope happens. (this is an optimistic plan)

Example of what is most likely to happen every weekday:

10:00PM Read a calming book!
11:00PM Sleep
7:00AM Awake!
7:00AM-8:00AM Cooking/Eating!
8:00AM-8:25AM Showering and hygiene
8:25AM-8:30AM Dressing
8:30AM-9:00AM Commute by bicycle! Oo lala!
9:00AM-9:50AM Read notes for class, print off work at school, last checks on homework, and such! Brush up on it all! Get ready for this marvelous day!
10:00AM-10:50AM Class 1!
11:00AM-11:50AM Class 2!
12:00PM-2:00PM Lunch and workout!
2:00PM-2:50PM Class 3!
3:00PM-3:50PM Class 4!
4:00PM-4:30PM Commute by bicycle! Nearly there!
4:30PM-5:30PM Dinner!
5:30PM-8:30PM Homework! Argh, it is a do or die situation! We can do it!
8:30PM-9:30PM Relaxation! Cool them jets so our mind can unwind!
9:30PM-10:00PM Get ready for bed!

You should condense 7 - 8:30 by cook all your meals thrice a month. I do that for breakfast and lunch.

You're just heading to a university after attending a community college right? I'm not really clear what a CC is but it's some kind of easier kind of school? Don't stress too much man, things will fall into place as you get a rhythm going. Enjoy the ride, don't freak out.

I worked harder than that when I was in high school, you seriously think you can finish your daily homework in 3 hours???? I think i spent a good 4-6 hours a night my last two years on just reading/homework/labs, going to bed at 10 isnt going to happen.
