I'm Chinese/Philippino. When I was growing up, I heard the term "oriental" when referring to people or objeccts. It wasn't until college when the Politically Correct craze really took off did I ever even hear the term "Asian" when referring to people.

I think "Asian" is just a BS PC term, that has unfortunately (based on the responses here) become the prevalent mainstream term. How many Asians look Oriental? Indians are Asian, but I don't think they look "oriental." A lot of Caucasian Russians are Asian, and they don't look Oriental. Asian is a seriously stupid term to use with people if you're trying to describe a certain race or look.

Here we go again. I am old so when we were kids it was normal and acceptable to use the term Oriental. It was not used in a disparaging manner and no disrespect was implied or intended. Since the PC movement it seems everyone in the world has a bug up their ass and demands that verbage be tailored to their liking or they will cry foul and call you a racist or insensitive. Because of all the whiney useless people in the world I make it a point to be unPC. I usually use the term Asian but I reserve the right to slip and say Oriental......but knowing that using Oriental gets certain people's undies in a bundle just makes it all the more appealing to use in my opinion. Thicken you skin people because the world is a tough place and you are merely displaying your inability to compete when you let such silly stuff bother you.

But if you must, use Asian. Oriental is definitely for objects.

I object to being generalized as white or even worse caucasian.

I prefer to properly described as of Scottish, Irish, English and German descent.

Or if you must generalize just call me Euro-American.

Call me WASP.....

I don't want to be white, euro-american or anything of the sort.

Since I am part Cherokee, Scottish, Irish, German, and several others that I can't remember at the moment, I prefer to be called...

American.

...and I'm proud to say it...

...and yes, I order in English!

(Shout out to Geno's steaks....)

I think it's quite possible to generate an irony fueled explosion by getting offended by PC terminology.

That said, they are just words, but if people get offended by certain words, I see no reason NOT to switch to something else. Hell, it's no skin off my back what word I use to describe someone. You want to be "black" "African-American" or "negro", what the hell difference does it make to me? If they're just words, they're just words, you can't have it both ways.

The only time I have been called an Oriental was when this redneck yelled at me and said "Fvck you orientals! Go back to your fvcking country!"

So now I associate the word Oriental with rednecks.

short? check.
slit eyed? check.

Oriental they be. They are from the orient. To say otherwise is just flat PC nonsense.

Oriental = mongoloid.

-edit- and for those that don't understand how this race came to be and the reasons for the different physical attributes - shame on you.

Here are a list of countries in Asia.

You could call an Indian an Asian.
You could call an Iraqi an Asian.
You could call a Japanese an Asian.
You could call a Russian an Asian.
You could call a Syrian an Asian.
You could call a Thai an Asian.
You could call a Saudi an Asian.
You could call a Chinese an Asian.
You could call a Georgian an Asian.
You could call an Israeli an Asian.
The list goes on and on and on.

You could not call an Indian an Oriental.
You could not call an Iraqi an Oriental.
You could call a Japanese an Oriental.
You could not call a Russian an Oriental.
You could not call a Syrian an Oriental.
You could call a Thai an Oriental.
You could not call a Saudi an Oriental.
You could call a Chinese an Oriental.
You could not call a Georgian an Oriental.
You could not call an Israeli an Oriental.
The list goes on and on and on.

Educate yourself. Use common sense. Think about the words you're using and what they mean.

oriental is a relative, euro-centric term. everything from TUrkey and on was considered the orient

i think people want to use the term "asian" to be more non-western-hemisphere centric

In some parts of the US and the world, it's still the standard way.

There's nothing inherently offensive about "oriental," so whatever.

From what I recall in school, the most cutting edge, proper way to refer to them (well, us ) is as, "Asian Americans." Note the lack of a hyphen.

Show me the etymology that proves it's "definitely for objects."

It's a reference. When he was a kid he shot cats. I'm sure there were quite a few things he did and said when he was a kid that would offend tons of people unintentionally.
