How many of you use a mouse pad of some kind?

Lately my mouse has very spuratic movement, and i noticed the black wood surface of my desk has tiny groove in it, which I think are interfering with the opical.

Do most of you with opicals still use a mouse pad ?

I do, I have an MX500 and an MX310. It just feels alot smoother (physically, not on the screen).

Yeah. I still use one. Solid, dark color. Usually with a cloth surface that's got a fine, uniform weave pattern. Haven't had a problem in years.

I've got an MX300 and a Logitech iFeel and I always use a mousepad, just feels more natural to me on top of being slicker (using a RatpadzGS).

I've also got an MX700, and seem to experience the same problem as you, from time to time. My cursor will jump weirdly, but it doesn't happen all the time. It also seems to be when the optical sensor comes across a particular area of my woodgrain finish desk. I so want to get a Ratpadz, but I don't have the space for it!

When you get a mousepad, don't forget to get one with light colors. Logitech claims the battery life will last longer between recharges when mousing over a light surface, since it doesn't have to increase the intensity of the LED as much.

I noticed that if I put my MX700 on black surfaces, it responds sluggishly, the cursor jumps around, and sometimes the cursor moves all by itself.

I've got mine on a "water drop" pattern blue mousepad, and it's never failed me. Sounds like you might want to go for a lighter color based on the advice here, but I just use a pad so I don't wear a hole through my desk ;-)

I've also got a Func 1030 and it works great w/ my MX500, I've been very happy w/ it, I've had it 6+ months and it still seems to be holding up fine.

I've the same mouse. Had the same problems when I wasn't using a mousepad. I game alot so it finally dawned on me that the surface under the mouse had become polished. An optical mouse sometimes has problems with shiny surfaces. I got a mousepad and the problems went away....well, for awhile at least.

I'm now noticing irratic behaviour with the mouse...sometimes when I drag objects, the cursor doesn't want to let go of the object. Other times, if I'm trying to grab a window to drag it somewhere on the screen, the drag registers as a double-click and the window ends up maximizing.

I love the mouse itself. The problem may be because, as I said, I game....ALOT. My mice usually accumulate mileage very quickly in a short amount of time. It could be that I just need another mouse.

Also, this particular mouse doesn't seem to respond well to KVM switches. I lost all the cool features of this particular mouse when I started using KVMs. I've read about this problem in reviews also. Sorta sucks, but I bear with it. Problems like, the scroll wheel stops scrolling and the side buttons stop functioning also. I've noticed that this only happens when I've recently rebooted and haven't pressed a KVM button yet. As soon as I go to another machine via the KVM then come back, the functionality is lost. What's funny is that this doesn't happen on the Linux boxes...only the XP ones (driver issues?).

Thought we were talking Logitech...

Anyways, I've owned that one and quite a few other opticals...they may be different brands but I've yet to see any optical mouse respond well to reflective surfaces. When you use the same mouse day by day without moving it beyond where you normally use it, it tends to wear down a surface, hence, polishing. My desk has a non-polished surface and my mouse worked on it fine until I'd worn down where I normally use the mouse on the desk. What's not polished usually becomes polished after countless motions of rubbing...fine jewelry comes to mind. So, it may not be the mouse itself that's the problem, but definitely something mouse-related. The surface under the mouse definitely relates to the mouse.

lol, i'm using a similar mousepad with a water drop pattern against a blue background. it says Allsop on it but yeah this is one of the best optical/mousepad combinations i've had in a while. been using it now for almost 6 months straight with no problems at all. my old optical mouse i used on a smooth woodgrain finish desk without a mousepad and that worked well for me too until the woodgrain finish started rubbing off from playing too much counterstrike. i think they recommend not too dark or too light of a surface for optical mice to function at their best.

MX300 here too and mousepad as well.

Feels more natural with a mousepad, plus with a mousepad, the bottom surface of the mouse doesn't get scratched up against the harder surface of my desk over time.

I just went from a ratpadz to a func 1030. The Ratpadz was great until the center wore out. Hopefully the func will last a bit longer.

It`s not bad for a cheap mousepad and great buy at the price(I owned one) but nothing like the speed and smoothness of a mousepad like a Everglide Giganta or my current Flexiglow FXGamepad (Link ).

It`s worth spending money on a good mousepad with a good mouse IMHO,it`s like having a good case with a good PSU.

Gamers should definitely buy a decent mouse pad.

Nowadays there`s a lot of good mouse pads around like the fUnc 1030,Everglide,Ratpadz,Steelpad, black Icemat to name but a few.

I also have some mouseskates. (Teflon pads that stick to underside of mouse and make it glide smoother.)
