hmmm......first of all, I installed this on a Danish version of Win98SE, is this bad?

It seems to be kinda choppy on some pages, like the Anand forums.....

I like the way it marks text, it sticks less to that motherf*cking Word-ish way of marking whole words when you drags your mouse......

Grrrr......when I open a new window, it's always positioned in either the top left or right corner of the screen.....anyone else get this?

post your replies and thoughts please

They make Windows 98 for people living in Dainard?

hehe

I really hate that whole word highlight thing too. Ticks me off, because 90% of the time I DONT want the whole fricken word.

Ill be downloading it in a little bit so I cant comment on any of the other things you mentioned.

Thoughts? I think it's Internet Explorer 5.0 with a new number to suggest a new and innovative version, which I am yet to discover! =)

I didn't notice a change in performance, nor any cosmetic changes...but that's just me; I could be wrong.

I've been running IE 5.5 beta for the last 3-4 months on my NT Server 4.0 and it is simply rocks!

It's seems faster than 5.01.

5.5 on Windows 2000 at home and Windows 98 at work; both running great with no problems at all. Can't see much difference though.

I'm with you Prodigy, 5.5 sucks on my system...I get an explorer crash every 5 minutes! :| Never happens with 5.0 If you've got Win2k you can revert to 5.0 painlessly. 5.5 is in the add/remove programs menu.

[edit]oops, just saw you were using w98...maybe it is unistallable in 98 too? [/edit]

I remember trying out 5.5 beta a while ago.
I think the main changes were for developers.

For instance (I might be wrong about this), but I think IE 5.5 is the only browser that can render words vertically.
This might not seem like a big deal, but it makes table heading look much nicer and is a lot easier then creating JPGs labels.
If I am not mistaken there are other changes like this that you probably won't notice until people start using them.

hmmmmm well it might be my system....plus the fact that I installed an English version on my Danish OS really turned Windows into a hybrid with English here, Danish there

oh well, I'll reinstall windows soon and won't bother upgrading then

I noticed that they modified the "viewer" part of the browser - that is, the part used by Eudora and probably other mail clients to process HTML coding in mail.

It's ugly now - Eudora displays everything in Times New Roman and I can't stand it. If anyone has any way of getting rid of that problem let me know.

[edit]: Okay I figured it out - for all interested parties, you go to TOOLS -> Internet Options -> click on FONTS on the bottom and select ARIAL or whatever you want.

This didn't use to be a problem in the old IE, I wonder why it bugs me now.

I've been using IE5.5 Beta since it was first relaeased with no problems. In fact is is faster than 5.01 for me.

In Win 98SE IE5.5 asily be uninstalled with "Microsoft System Information." Under "tools" Click on "repair Internet Explorer" and "restore the previous windows configuration."

It seems to load pages slower than it used to - for example, the AnandTech forums show up a lot slower than before. Odd.

Downloaded 5.5 last night (not the beta). It crashes on me every 15 min or so (page default in mshtml.dll). This ver. isn't any faster for my system. When Itried to uninstall to previous ver. it went back to IE 4.x instead of 5.01 which was very stable for me. Tried a 2nd install of 5.5 and have the same crashes. Is there any way to download 5.01 to a file so it can be copied to a cd?

As was said earlier 5.5 was mainly an upgrade for Web Developers (*like me, hehe*)

If I remember correctly it added more support for XML and more support for the new W3C standard XHTML 1.0 Haven't verified that cause haven't had the chance to play with it yet.

Now if only stupid Netscape would actually add support for XML or XHTML and more support for CSS I could actually think of using Netscape again.

I think the only difference a normal user will see is that there is a button for MSN Messager (*or at least there is in the beta version*)
