So I have a Hispanic buddy. Sometimes we speak a little spanish, sometimes we speak a little english.

So he said something to me derogatory (in a funny way - we kid around). I replied with "yo' mamma!", obviously slang for "your mother".

But he says to me that in spanish "yo" means "I" or "me", so by me saying "yo' mamma' I was actually saying my mother, so I actually put down myself.

I told him I was speaking english, and the "yo'" wasn't "yo", but in fact "yo'", but he just said it wasn't clear because we were talking spanish earlier. I said but we were speaking english most recently, but he said since we go back and forth the burden was on me to specify which we were speaking, and since I didn't my statement should be read against me.

Thoughts? Did I punk myself? Thanks.

Some words can mean completely different things in other languages.

I like the fact that the F word actually means "screwed up" in French. So when you say "ca c'est toute foquer" it really means "that's all screwed up".

It also means seal (the animal) but it's spelled differently.

Not really. At least not in that particular instance. The short answer is that he was basically just taking advantage of your Spanish-ignorance to give you a little extra shit...

The slightly less short answer is that if you were silly enough to say "yo mamá", with the accent on the second syllable, he might sort of have a point, though to most Spanish speakers who might've thought you were trying to respond in Spanish rather than English, what you said would just sound more like you're less-than-poorly educated and a moron than that you were even trying to say "my mom". Like in English, there are just some things that pretty much no native Spanish speaker, however uneducated, illiterate, etc. would ever say, and "yo mamá" is one of them.

likely OP is not Mayne as I don't see a reason why Mayne would speak spanish in Toronto. Also OP has a high number of "special" characters like ( " and ' and resembles a cohoerent thought, if thought by a child. Further, Mayne rarely uses proper punctuation and usually bumps his own threads far more frequently. And I've never seen Mayne say "Thanks" before.
