Thoughts on a GIXR 750?

So I acknowledge that going for a Hayabusa for my first bike might be a little aggresive. What you guys think about the GSXR 750s? Yes, I know you are going to say they have been the same for like the last 12 years, and that is valid, but at a minimum won't that help their reliability? And they look AWESOME, mainly that orange and black paint job, maybe my favorite looking sports bike. Picture:

Freaking BEAUTIFUL.

And like 120 some horsepower, so not blistering fast like a leader bike, but I don't want that for a starter bike. And still pretty fast, and likely more torquey given the 750 displacement over a 600 making if easier/funner to ride with less a reason to rev it high and kill yourself LOL.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!!

The term is liter bike, not leader bike, it is a generic term for any 1000cc sportbike, like the Yamaha R1 or GSXR1000. Liter=1000cc.

And a 750cc sportbike is a horrible choice for a new rider. So is a 600cc sportbike.

I don’t think you have any idea how much power 120hp is on a motorcycle. My last bike was a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S which had an 1198cc liquid-cooler L-Twin engine making 150hp which is a lot of power. Great bike, very linear power delivery, tons of torque but a fairly heavy bike at around 500lbs as it was more of and adventure/sport touring bike. Still, once you were moving it handled like a much lighter bike and it was very easy to turn in and was simply amazing in the canyons. It was not my first bike, nor would I recommend it for a new rider. And by new rider I mean anyone who has never ridden a motorcycle before to anyone with fewer than 5000 miles riding experience.

A sportbike is not a forgiving machine. Power delivery is not smooth and linear, especially on a 600cc sportbike. They are mild down low but once you get into the powerband it comes on strong and quickly becomes more than you might be able to handle, especially if you are coming on the power while leaned over. Most bikes these days have TC and ABS which will help keep you out of trouble but I still think a sportbike is a poor choice for a new rider. A smaller, lighter bike will be easier to learn the fundamentals on and you will learn more quickly than on a heavier, more powerful bike.

I have no idea why anyone buys a liter bike for street use. You could literally hit 100mph in first gear and if riding legally you will never get into the powerband unless you take it to the track.

My recommendation would be an SV650 as the most powerful bike you should be considering. It has a liquid cooled L-Twin engine with around 75hp, which is plenty for a bike. Power delivery is very linear and it had plenty of grunt. Honestly, a 250-300cc bike would be even better.

Don't listen to Jules...he's just being...reasonable. I think you should go for it. Ignore the naysayers. You were born to ride...and ride FAST and on the edge. Remember, Darwin needs his...volunteers. (just, please, don't take anyone else out with you.)

I could tell you about a kid my son knew from high school who bought a 600cc sportbike as his first motorcycle. He died because he was riding beyond his ability but I’m sure you’ll do fine.

I hear you Jules. Much thanks. Including for your input further above, it was not lost on me, thanks so much.

I just started a new thread, going to look for a used bike, either a cruiser type or a smaller sport type. But probably a cruiser type.

I can tell you how many numbskulls I encountered in the military that bought 'busas because it was just the thing to do. Not a one did more with it than get themselves into trouble, and for almost all of them it was their first bike.

I had an SV650 almost a decade ago … think I got the rec from @JulesMaximus in a similar thread I made at the time. I don’t ride anymore but the bike was awesome. Way more than enough power, nice riding position for the street, relatively light .. and if I was to pick the hobby back up I’d be looking for another one. Mine was an 03, bought for $2500 sold for $2500 a couple years later mostly due to lack of storage space. It was very manageable as a new rider.

I bought mine brand new in 2008 and sold it 3 years later after I put 18000 miles on it. I think I paid about $6800 for it and when I sold it I got just under $5k for it. It was cheap to maintain and got almost 50mpg. It isn’t a slow bike, it will rip 0-60 in 4 seconds flat so it is faster than most cars. I dig naked bikes.

I was on a group ride where a kid riding a 750 Gixxer crossed the centerline on a corner and hit a car right in the middle and yard saled his new bike in someone's lawn. He had previously crashed a 600c but made it through unscathed. He was dead instantly. I have been riding since 1984, even a 600cc is plenty for an experienced rider.

I'm thinking about a Royal Enfield myself, the INT650. For a new rider I think an older Ninja 500 is a great bike to learn on, and it has enough power to grow with you for a couple years if you're wanting a sportier bike. I have taken many advanced riding classes, which focus on panic stopping and negotiating corners. If you're in a more urban environment God help you.

When I bought my Multistrada I wasn’t overly impressed with the tires it came with so I put Michelin Pilot Power sport rubber on it and listed the OEM Pirelli Scorpion tires on Craigslist for $100 for the pair. I quickly got a call from a guy who wanted to put them on a Ducati 1198S sport bike. I told him that the tires were not designed for that bike but he seemed more concerned with if they would fit than if they were a good fit for his bike.

Pirelli Scorpion motorcycle tires are a dual sport tire designed for road and off-road use. It would be like putting Land Rover tires on a Ferrari.

Did you just get your M1 via MSF and you want a 750cc sport bike? Can I take out life insurance on you?

I think you're too late. Allegedly he picked up a bike via some bike-share thing on Friday...after stopping for a few beers. He hasn't been heard from since.

I'm not sure there is anyone here who thinks Salty has even sat on a bike, let alone ride one.
