It is possible to block pain signals with acupuncture. It does that at least. I have experienced it first hand. And no, this ain't no placebo since I did not believe anything can block out tooth pain. My (grade 7) music teacher was also an acupuncture guy and one day during choral practice my tooth started hurting like hell. Swelling and the whole nine yards. He pulled out a round headed key, pressed two spots on my ear, asked me which hurt more. Then he applied pressure with the key for like 9-10 seconds.

Tooth pain went away in a min or 2. He said he just blocked the signal, I still had to go to the dentist, but at least I wasn't in pain.

I was completely skeptical, but it worked, so at least it can temporarily block pain signals.

I’m always being told I should go see a acupuncturist as I suffer from chronic headaches, which range from annoying to crippling. I’ve been very resistance because of a few reasons, one being from everything I’ve read about them, they’re nowhere near as regulated as any MD or the like. That right there makes me question wtf going on with them. All the doctors I’ve spoken to (all of the ones I’ve seen in the past and currently, as well as the ones in the ER/Urgent Care) and not one of them have recommended it. They’ve most any of them have said is, “well, you can try it. It might have some help for you”. Mostly they’ve been against it as there’s no concrete cases of it truly being helpful. It also seems like most, if not all try to sell you herbs that’ll fix you. Herbs that could affect the meds I’m on that are being helpful. All the people I’ve talked to who suffer from similar issues and have tried it, reported no joy. Not one of them had any relief from their pain. As it seemed like my head gets worse whenever we mess with it (things really went off the chain when I had surgery for what, at the time we thought were sinus related headaches) I’m not touching it. I’d need to see someone who performs it’s records in helping people, and I should be able to talk to them myself with questions.. not just “look at this awesomely colorful PowerPoint presentation I’ve put together.. please make note of my use of cats in it. That alone should sway you.”

I mixed up my terms. You're right, homeopathy and acupuncture fall under the broader umbrella of "alternative medicine" - which still means that they have no basis in science.

There are plenty of "alternative medicines" that have some scientific backing behind them. Herbal medicine is considered "alternative". Where do you think your prescription meds come from? Alot of them come from chemicals extracted or produced using different plants. There are thousands of herbal supplements that do exactly what they claim.

Homeopathy is complete BS. Massage (deep tissue, friction) therapy has been proven many times to be effective.

Chiro and Acupuncture have some basis in science, but they certainly aren't going to cure cancer like alot of loons try to make you believe.
