Basically a write-up of lessons learned from a guy who helped out some friends during the whole Katrina deal. Really interesting read and some good information I thought.

Everyone should be ready. EMP blast, Ice storms, wind storms, new mardrid seismic zone, supervolcano yellowstone. The family has a six month supply of dry goods in pantry that we cycle out from time to time. That and a shotgun.

Good read. ONe point of mine is learing to prep food without power. Dutch oven cooking is the way to go for that I think. Can't rely on propane to be available.

I remember when the whole Y2K thing was happening and my friends mom prepared for the whole year. She had a well dug in the backyard and had 55 gallon drums of water and gasoline, generators, MRE's and tons of canned food. We all joked about it but I knew exactly where I was headed first if crap hit the fan. After nothing happened we had plenty of food for months.

I am not prepared, but I live in Los Angeles. We will plunder the landscape around us.. plus we have a lot of CostCos............................

You live rural? In a situation like mine, suburbia right next to the city, I'm more concerned about picking the right time to get out of town. If things got really bad, the city is the last place I want to be.

Where I live, it's virtually impossible to have a disaster that will affect more than a few of my family members within a day's driving distance. The geography pretty much prevents that. My cousin's the only one in danger of earthquakes and a potential hurricane (he lives in the coast), I'm the only one in danger of any type of flood (outside of roads being washed out/localized flooding), to burn more than two houses there would need to be a fire that covers an area about the same size as Vermont in an inhabited area.

There's some good points about living in a state with mountains, they tend to break up major environmental effects

Every time I stock up on canned food, I eat it all

I do need to buy more ammo though....

If you have enough ammo you can take what you need from everyone else.

I have a shotgun, lots of shells, and live half a block from a yacht harbor.

I can't think of a gun I'd rather have than mine in that situation... I don't think anyone would DARE challenge me while I'm walking around with an AK slung over my shoulder....

Even if I had a gun in a disaster situation, I doubt I could ever use it against someone less prepared.

Sure you could. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. It's even better when you have huge magazines so that you have plenty of ammo on demand in case anyone disagrees.

I need to buy a drum before they become illegal again

I doubt you have the guts to do it! Your conscience would get to you first.

Very good read. Certainly brought points I had enevr even thought of before. My fiance and I will hopefully be moving for a new job, but into a potential disaster area (Florida). I've already figured out my bug-out location and the route...but I really do like the idea of the teams. Else, I know my fiance is quite good with guns, and we'd pull shifts.

I know I could. My first priority is to protect my family (fiance and pets), and then my property. I would have no problem threatening would-be trouble-makers with lethal force, and then actually using using that force if I had to.

The thought of aggressive rescue authorities is very troubling if you're perfectly able to cope.

When they objected, they were threatened. They had pets, and wanted to know what would happen to them and they report that a uniformed man (agency unknown) began pointing his rifle at the pets with the words "I'll fix that". The husband then trained his own shotgun on the man and explained to him, in words of approximately one syllable, what was going to happen to him if he fired a shot.

I loved that part.

I live in San Fran and i don't know when the next 'big one' will hit. I am somewhat prepared. I have a bug-out-bag that i prepared with 72 hours worth of supplies. It contains some food (protein bars), water, first aid kit, a multitool, flashlights, batteries, a mini prybar, toilet paper, clothes, $200 small bills, ID's and a pistol w/ ammo. I don't plan on using the pistol, but if the SHTF, i want to be prepared.

Everyone should have a bug out bag.

Definitely. One in your car that will get you by if you can't make it home for a day or two (stuck at work, stuck at a friend's house, etc.), and a more substantial one at home should you need to "get the hell out of Dodge."
