I actually find thickness to be more annoying, because thickness means that the phone is pressing against your thigh while in your pocket. Thin phones just slip right into the jeans.

This. Never had any problems with phones like the Note 3 because they're so thin, and if anything I prefer thin phablets because smaller phones tend to move around in your pocket more. My iPhone 5S sometimes will not sit straight in the pocket, it will go diagonal, or even end up horizontal in the pocket and I'm not a fan of that.

Hey guys I know this topic has probably popped up a few times since the original note was released. However, I noticed that in the past few years the industry and people in general have become more embracing of the "phablet". With that said and since I'm considering a larger phone I'd like some input on some of your experiences regarding a larger phone. For example, do you find it hard to sit with the phone in your pocket? Do you take it out everytime you sit? Thanks!

I have used a large phone since the Note 2. I keep it in my pocket most of the time and I have no issues at all. However I do not wear tight pants. I have heard of issues for people who wear their pants a bit tight.

I love the large screen. Its so nice being able to see text clearly, videos nice and big. My advice is to go to a store and surf the web or play around on a bigger phone, then do the same on a smaller phone. You will instantly want that bigger screen.

I switched from my Note 2 to an iPhone 5S. I wanted to rip my eyes out every time I tried to use it. Then I went to a Galaxy S5 and my eyes were happy again. Now I'm on the OnePlus One and I am very happy. I could never go to a small phone.

i have no issues with pocketing my note 3. of course im a larger dood with relaxed fit pants. i usually have pants on with either cargo pockets or a "side" pocket, like dickies. when i do keep it in my front pocket, i usually take it out when isit down so i dont have to do the pocket fish if it rings.

People are always too quick to associate small designs with superior ergonomics. Needing pincers and magnifying glass to operate anything on the screen, that is the real ergonomic nightmare. This is why I think large phones are becoming more of a thing. I think we've collectively settled on something of a sweet spot now, though. We're not going far beyond the current 5-5.5 inch norm.

Small was nice back in the day when the only thing my phone needed to do was make phone calls. Now phone calling is just one thing they do, and it's no where close to being the main use either. Big screens benefit web browsing, email, games, e-books, video, photos, and most apps in general. It's no wonder the market has shifted to bigger screens. I do think we'll see most devices in the 5" to 6" screen range for the foreseeable future.

It might be harder for females but I know that it's not hard at all for guys to find jeans or slacks with pockets large enough to hold a phablet, unless you're into the uber skinny jeans look.

in which case, imo, you have more problems than just carrying your phone....

I cannot wait for the day I can have a 7" tablet with 4G and real texting. I'll sign up the day its possible. Pair it with a smart watch and a BT headset and I'll be in nerd heaven.

People who use Hangouts with Google Voice have had this option for a couple of months. People who ditched SMS/MMS and use other, better messaging options have had this option for years.

To me there is a line. Up to a certain size it can be used one-handed, and after that you might as well just run around with as big as you can carry. For example, the One Plus One is JUST big enough I can't use it one handed. It might as well have a 6 inch screen because I have to two hand it anyway.

I have Google Voice but some quirks with the texting made me switch back to regular texting. I use that as my internet phone line. I'll give out that number to whoever and blacklist anyone who annoys me. I've posted it in the forums many times.

I'm looking for a new phone and considering the Note 4, Galaxy S5, LG G3. The Note 4 pretty much hits all the check boxes for the perfect phone, but it seems just too darn big and bulky to me. The LG G3, though just about the same size, seems a lot smaller when you hold it, but is has an older processor and lacks some of the features of the N4. The S5 is just a tad too small for me probably, but the waterproof angle seems good and overall it's a good phone.

One thing I've noticed with just about everyone who has one of the note phones (2,3, 4) is that their screen is cracked. Much more so than with people who have "normal" size phones. What do you guys think, are those bigger phones more prone to cracked screens?

I did not like my LG OG Pro due to its size and promptly traded it for an HTC One M7. I did like my OnePlus One which was taller, skinnier, and thinner with the same size screen. I think it is mistake to think all big phones are created equal and there is nothing like holding them in your hand before you make a decision as to whether it is going to work for you or not.

They are not more prone to cracking, they are just much more expensive to fix. The average cost of an iPhone 5 screen is somewhere around $40. The average cost for a Note 3 screen is $250.

The integration with Hangouts is new (<2 months), have you tried since? I understand that it's not for everyone, just thought that maybe you didn't realize that your 'nerd heaven' may be closer than you think.

Nope. I can't say I've ever opened hangouts.

Dang, I had no idea. You obviously know about fixing those screens, what makes the larger ones that much more expensive? Is it just the part is that much more?

That gives me pause and makes me wonder about buying the note 4, I don't want to be stuck with a cracked screen.

My phone isn't huge (LG G2) but I don't like the feeling of it in my pocket when I sit down, so I always take it out and put it on whatever surface I can when sitting. The exception is when I wear cargo pants, and it fits in the larger lower pocket.

In the pockets of jeans when I reach or bend forward I can feel it pressing on the phone, and while I have never hurt it, I don't want to chance it going pop!

For Galaxies the part is more. They bind the screen to the digitizer, so you replace none or both. Been that way since the S4, its how they do thin AND a removable battery/back.

Those prices were just the part. iPhone screens are cheaper and easier to make. You can run 50,000 iPhone 5 screens and make $5 each or run 10,000 Samsung screens in 15 different models and hope you make $5 each.

For reference: the current cost for an iPhone 6+ screen is $450.

Thanks for the education So there is basically a glass outer lens and then a screen assembly, but they seal the two together. Apparently there's a way to separate them and only replace the glass lens part instead of both, but it doesn't sound like an easy thing to do.

Makes me definitely pause before buying a note 4. I don't want to have to pay $500 or $600 just to replace the screen if it cracks. I've never cracked a phone screen before, but there's always the chance.

Not only is it not easy to do, but I have never met anyone that pulled that off and still had full digitizer functionality. It is kinda a baby and bathwater type deal.

Put it in a tough case and treat it well, that is all you can do. I had my S4 in a Neo Hybrid with a glass screen protector for 14 months and it survived 10ish drops on my tile floor before it didn't survive one. The Note 4 has some nice cases.
