Greetings good people of Anandtech, picked up skyrim from steams summer sale, and must sadly accept that my old rig needs an upgrade if I want all the juicy stuff, (E8600 and 8800 GTS...)

I plan to get:

CPU: i5 3570K

CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (with 2 Scythe Gentle Typhoon D1225C12B4AP-14)

GFX: Sapphire RADEON HD 7870 GHz Edition OC (price in DK from 7870 to 7850 is so little so I might aswell)

GFX cooler: Arctic Cooling Accelero TWIN TURBO II

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4 GB

SSD : samsung 250 gb, (got this already from old rig)

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series Modular TX750M

I will be reusing my Antec 900, bluray burner and all that stuff.

I like to think I have found a fairly ballanced new rig, but more eyes are always a good thing, the computer is mostly a media center (with some skyrim plus random games now and then) the only thing I feel insecure about is the PSU, the rest I feel fairly sure of

Generally looks good to me. Two things:

1. Make sure the RAM doesn't have huge fins on it. Any 1.5v CL9 DDR3-1333 or higher will work.
2. The PSU is overkill. 550W or so, with most or all of that available on the 12 rail(s), would be plenty.

Please answer the questions in the sticky.
-> budget?
-> where are you buying from?
-> are you going to / willing to overclock?
-> gaming resolution?

want to stick with AMD/ATI cards for this round,
7870 = 330$ 2000kr
7950= 415$ 2600kr (danish krones)

I game at 1920x1080 (yes one of those )
I don't plan to do much OC, maybe a bit for the fun.

totally I hope to keep it within 1100$

I picked 1.3V ram because I read that they should generally be of better quality?

I'm using edbpriser.dk (a price searcher for Denmark)

I plan to buy this rig in 14 days

Nothing wrong with standard 1.5v RAM, RAM is well enough beyond the curve of other components when it comes to a gaming build that it won't have too much impact aside from capacity.

Also going off these Anandtech benchmarks I'm not entirely certain I'd be willing to pay roughly another $100 or roughly 33% more to change up to the 7950 for such a small difference in performance level. For some really large resolution it's probably worth it, but for 1920x1080 either one should be fine and the 7870 comes quite a bit cheaper.

That being said those are both pretty pricey compared to purchasing them in the US.

ok thanks for the help, I stick with the 7870 then unless the 7950 keeps dropping o.0 went down $40 overnight, so I see in 14 days only $80 difference now

:thumbsup::thumbsup: on this. There is "low profile" (really standard profile) Vengeance, but you don't give enough information for us to figure out which you're looking at.

Ballistix Sport is standard profile. This is low profile.

I come to this section just to read your posts for this type of info. Thanks for all your contributions to this community man, AT should pay you...

I distinctly remember mfenn saying that "low profile" was just a gimmick, but perhaps I'm the only one that remembers that

And for this generation of cards, at the really high end both AMD and nVidia offer some pretty good cards so I think you're safe regardless. Just want to watch how much you're paying for any particular card.

I believe it was something like this (paraphrasing). Actual low profile is fine if you are in a height constrained environment. Selling standard profile DIMMs as "low profile" because your other DIMMs are stupidly tall is the reason that marketers should be crucified next to the lawyers. :awe:
