Thoughts on Sleeping Dogs?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering your thoughts on the upcoming game Sleeping Dogs? Looks like a pretty good balance between GTA and Saints Row, with a heavy focus on hand to hand combat. When I watched the preview on game trailers it reminded me a lot of San Andreas which is my favorite of the GTA games. On the other hand switching of developers part way through the development process makes me nervous, and even if it's a great game who knows if it will be a decent PC port. Considering pre-ordering from Greenman Gaming with a 25% off coupon, but it may be worth waiting to see what the final product is like.

I pre-ordered it on GreenManGaming for $36 or something. I'm excited for it.

IIRC, it was originally True Crime 3, and Activision was publishing it. The game was pretty much finished, it was awesome in every way, and it was almost released until Activision was like "lol nevermind we're scrapping this game so we can make more Call of Duties which make us more money. sorry guys" and they dropped the entire development studio like a bad habit.

Then Square Enix approached them and was like "here guys, let us look at your game" and they looked at it, and they were like "WTF, this game is amazing, what was Activision smoking. We have a real gem on our hands. Let's publish this." While they acquired the game, they didn't acquire the rights to the True Crime name. So they renamed the title to Sleeping Dogs.

It'll be coming out in two weeks.

I'm particularly excited for an open-world city game with a deep story and interesting characters (which GTA doesn't offer IMO). Also the strong focus on good, martial-arts style melee combat.

Honestly this is one of the few games I'm actually excited about this year (the others are GW2, BL2, and Dishonored). I'm really tempted to pre-order this considering the deal I can get, but I've been shafted on pre-orders before, particularly with PC games.

I am all about any good sandbox game. GTA, Saints Row 3, Just Cause 2, etc. I'll wait to hear how the PC version ends up though and may even wait for a sale... unless it's dubbed as the next coming of Christ

Is it still possible to get it for that cheap price? I'm so tempted even though I know I won't play it.

I am kind of curious about how it controls on a PC though. It has guns, which would make me want to use a mouse, but it also has standard beat 'em up martial arts, which would make me want to use a gamepad. I guess I need to learn to swap between them fast enough!

GreenManGaming doesn't seem to have the 25% off price anymore; however, GetGames now has the exact same deal! Activates on Steam too. Get it while it's hot. http://getgamesgo.com/product/sleeping-dogs-digital-edition

I'm curious too. If the game is purely melee combat, I'd play it with a 360 pad, but I know it won't be. I'm pretty sure there is shooting in the game as well. So it will most likely be keyboard+mouse for me personally (can't shoot for shit with a gamepad).

Well it doesn't take much to make any open world game seem impressive. That is assuming its truly open world and not a mission by mission linear open city. But either way, i'm very skeptical because there has been way too many games that have been hyped from some good camera work and video editing only for the gameplay to end up sucking.
so no pre order from me, i'll just wait and see.

I'll have to look into that.

Maybe I could finally get used to using the extra buttons my Logitech G700 mouse as they could sort of serve as the ABXY/OCrossSquareTriangle. It makes me wonder why they never build a joystick into keyboards? Joysticks work great for selecting an azimuth, and I'd prefer to use one in a large selection of console-oriented games.

I wonder if there's a good joystick peripheral that I could get that would essentially serve as a left joystick on a gamepad. Hell, I could just set my 360 controller down and just use its joystick. That's if the game lets me use multiple input devices.

Saw this thread and immediately though you were talking about the game mechanic in many games where you have to avoid sleeping patrol dogs...

Thanks!

Its too bad that they don't add an Assassins Creed/Infamous style free running system. Doesn't need to be integral to the story or anything, just be cool. It looks like there is some elements of it, like when he leaps over carts or scales fences. But I'm talking about scaling walls and running on railing and stuff. So much freedom in an open world game, they might as well let you get from A to B in any way you want.

Metacritic has a few reviews for the 360 and PS3 version, but no PC reviews yet. Assuming the PC version runs well it sounds like a good game. They say it doesn't quite do enough differently from the rest of the genre, but it's still very good for fans of GTA and the like. Kind of want to preorder it now though I should really wait for a sale.

Not bad but doesn't sound like a major difference, although good to see the day 1 HD texture pak.

Game does look really interesting, the melee combat looks fun. For some reason, this game gives me a modern era River City Ransom vibe.

I enjoyed Saints Row 3 but I also felt like it was a bit lacking, namely the really simple gameplay mechanics (like that joystiq vid mentions, its like you have basically a punch button, and even the guns all feel about the same). I think that was also one of the biggest failings of Shenmue is that its fight system didn't feel fleshed out really well to where it felt fluid. It was like, the fighting felt like a totally different instance of gameplay. I've been waiting for a sorta beat 'em up that incorporates a wider variety of moves. Something like taking the old THQ N64 wrestling games' mechanics but without the awkward base movement those games had. Even Smash Bros level of move system where its nowhere close to a full fledged fighting engine, but its got enough depth to make the combat more interesting, and most importantly it feels fluid with the base movement. This game looks like it does a pretty good job of that.

I'm looking at picking this up maybe. I'll wait to see reviews after release. It looks like they didn't go over the top with "pre-order bonuses" that are required to get the full game which to me just reek of "my game is crap, so let me lock in purchases before word gets out", so it may be good.

Didn't really know anything about this game until maybe 2 weeks ago (kept thinking "That game from E3? Sweee....oh wait, that was Watch Dogs). Looks great tho, I went ahead and snagged a copy on GMG when it was $34. The martial arts stuff and stunt stuff seems really cool, and hopefully coming out from Square Enix, it'll be as polished as Just Cause 2 was on the PC.

I like that it takes the GTA style and moves it into a Hong Kong setting, then adds some martial arts and stunts to the mix.

I got bored with GTA4 before I reached the end of it, too much of a good thing I guess. I beat Saint's Row 3 4 times tho, so while I like the open world approach, I also like a concise story that doesn't drag on. I'm hoping that's what Sleeping Dogs brings to the table.

GTA 4 was by far the worst of the recent GTAs. San Andreas was the best, followed by Vice City. 3 and 4 were pretty similar in quality.

I hated the urban, pants sagging, thug type of setting you were cast in SA and it ruined the whole game for me. Barely put more than a couple hours in to the story and free roaming. Once I found out you had to eat and stuff, I turned that shit off and never looked back.
