Thoughts on the Wii U

I enjoy mine for the couple games I have. I got The Zombie U bundle that came with the black 32GB system, a Pro Controller, Zimbie U, & a download code for Nintendo Land.

Nintendo land sucks, Zombie U is so so but I also bought Mario and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Mario is well...mario. It's great but it's more of the same. The biggest cool factor for me is to play with a few people and one person takes the gamepad and uses it to add blocks to the game while we are playing. Monster Hunter is a love it or hate it. So far I like it. It's a lot of fun but without going online with it, some of the fun factor of the game is lost. It's repetitive, but if you go online it becomes a great game to get lost with.

Need for speed is pretty unique too. Player 2 can use the gamepad to add or remove traffic or change the weather on you. It's fun to toss a car right in your way and keep you on your toes, or remove it right before you slam into it.

As for the system as a whole, the battery in the controller needs to be bigger. The system doesn't have a whole ton of online content yet. There are some demoes and the like but there is a very small virtual console list that supposedly will grow over time.

So overall I'd recommend one if your interested in either Monster Hunter or have a second player for a couple of the games. I do also like the potential uses for the gamepad screen. Zombie U makes good use of it with your map and inventory for example.

Note: you will likely get a lot of people telling you there's no games and that theirs collects dust. Right now I can see that as being true for some people.

I had alot of fun with it for the first drunken night. After that it wasn't all that epic. I haven't poured alot of money into games though, just played the nintendo land one.

I bought one, beat New Super Mario Bros. U and sold it after about 2 months. Realized that playing a bunch of Nintendo games that might eventually come out in the future isn't worth paying $350 for, especially when I've got an entire backlog of great PS3/360 games to play. That and 3rd party support is pretty lackluster (though I've almost never bought a 3rd party game on a Nintendo console).

If you DO buy it, get it used. Should be able to get one for cheap.

Everyone we have had over really enjoys Nintendo Land. And it really shows off all the different ways the new gamepad can be used.

And Nyko is making bigger batteries for the Gamepad...

I personally don't own a Wii U and have no plans to get one. But of my friends who got a Wii most of them said they won't get a Wii U because they hardly used there Wii's.

I like mine, but there aren't really any games out for it yet. As such, I couldn't really recommend it to anyone else unless you just want to buy it in advance.

I just got it because I like to spend money on videogames.

I don't own one and have only played one for about two min but I say wait until later in this year and buy a ps4/720. Let the Wii U suffer the fate it deserves: an early death.

When the ps4 has no games coming out and the wiiu is getting smash bros, new Zelda, 3d Mario etc you will change your tune. 100% guaranteed.

This will happen...the games coming to the ps4 will include a bunch of garbage and a string of months between major releases.

But at least those systems will get better 3rd party support. The WiiU is already suffering the same fate of pervious Nintendo consoles, lack of 3rd party support. Too many announcements of ports not coming to the WiiU.

Also, none of those games you mentioned have any release dates at all. They probably won't be here for a couple years at least. Obviously if they were coming out this year it would have already been announced.

I agree with cmdrdredd's opinion. I would add that I think its worth $200 to almost any gaming fan, its worth more than that to a Nintendo game fan.

But that's also how much a PS3 or xbox 360 are worth to me. Which worked out well for me becasue by the time I got them they were better built, at least the 360, and there's lots of good games for cheap.

I wasn't really interested in the Wii U at release, but my Granddaughter got excited about it and I got a really good deal on one on Craigslist, so we do have one.

The only console for a few decades I thought was worth the release price was the original Wii. And I would still stick by that.

And e3 hasn't happened yet.

Every console in history has a weak lineup immediately after launch. I am not surprised at all. I bet the ps4 will have a few good launch games and then a bunch of junk while we wait months for the next good one.

What you are also missing is that someone who is a gamer at heart would have both a wiiu and a ps4 or Xbox. Nintendo makes some great games and the potential usages for the gamepad are exciting for many titles. The ps4 will obviously have the Sony titles and the big budget 3rd party games. Why not have both? I didn't see the op mention that they were only going to buy a wiiu and not think about a ps4 in the future.

To the OP,

Regardless of how you feel about the state of Nintendo's 3rd party, or the potential for first party releases down the road, the fact remains this is a pretty awful time to buy a Wii U.

You're paying the full price, with very few titles, and the promise/hope of future releases at undisclosed dates. Combined with the fact that the next gen launches later this year, which will almost certainly mean a price drop for the Wii U by no later than fall, I think paying full price for one now with so few quality games and just waiting would be an awful decision.

oooooh i did not realize we have psychics on this forum that seem to already know the release dates of unannounced games!

my thoughts on the wii u are that there are no good games out for it now, and i buy systems to play games now not in the future.

I did say that it would not be a wrong point of view to feel this way.

I am only responding to the post about "let Nintendo die, don't ever buy one". That to me is really an unfair judgement at this time. The new Zelda, Mario, smash bros are officially announced. They will come in time and probably one or two of them right when the ps4 and Xbox are at a lull with no games to buy.

a new zelda, mario, and smash bros being announced isn't really saying much. that is pretty much 100% guarantee when a nintendo console comes out. we have no clue when they are going to be released, and like you said, e3 hasn't even happened yet so we have no clue if ANY of those are going to be this year. i personally don't think a new mario (3d version, not 2d) or zelda will come out this year, but that is just due to their history of releases. i don't have any hard evidence to back up my assumption on, other than their history. i could be totally wrong.

a new zelda or mario game could be enough to get me to buy a wii u though, if they look like good games though. just the names alone won't sell me on it.

It is a Nintendo system, so I got it anticipating their releases.

That said, main reason I got the original Wii was No More Heroes, SMG, SSBB. The Wii U? NSMBU and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to play with my friend online and brother locally.

Note, my reasons include a third party entry. So if looking at a Nintendo platform as of late, one has to look deeper than one would for the other systems. And I put in over 50 hours in Monster Hunter.

I like the game pad's screen acting as a map, additional inventory buttons, signaling AI, and your status. The sticks and buttons feel just as nice as with the Xbox controller.

I just sold my Wii U yesterday after having it for about 2 months. Regret the purchase and going to think twice about purchasing Nintendo consoles (maybe not handhelds) in the future.

And You'll feel the same way about the PS4 after you play the two or three good launch titles.

Seriously, anyone at all surprised by this hasn't been around the industry long enough.

Whatever, Monster Hunter is actually very good on the WiiU.

The last line makes it sound like you take it personal that someone wouldn't like a WiiU. I skipped it because I haven't been into Nintendo stuff for a long time.

No it doesn't...people sell it right as more games appear and it makes them look like they didn't even want to try to use the hardware they bought.

As I said, you could have predicted this long ago. Simply look at the game release dates and say "oh damn, nothing coming for like 5 months!" But nooooooo...just complain about Nintendo on a forum.

How much did you sell it for?

If you already bough tit, it would make more sense to me to just keep it. You are likely going to buy another one in the future.

And yes, pretty much all consoles are like this at launch. Launch window games are almost always less-than-impressive. It takes a long time to build up a good library.

Actually, I'd sat that if the next Call of Duty were next-gen only (PS4, 720, PC), then it completely changes the game.
