OK being bored I was playing around with pcpartpicker.com and come up with this build:

What do you think, is the price right? I'm thinking that a build about this price should have a quad core CPU, 16GB of memory, and an SSD and HDD. Correct?

OK build I guess. Is this a planned build or just a "what if" scenario?

I'd personally spend the extra at this point for a 6-core CPU, either Intel or AMD. Otherwise it would make sense to build a Kaby Lake build and save the money because the CPUs and motherboards are less expensive. If staying with a Coffee Lake build, I'd go with the i5-8400.

Most people can get by just fine with 8GB, and with RAM prices so high, it's best to buy only what is needed, and add some later on if needed when prices are lower. Plus, I don't think I would go with anything slower than DDR4-3000.

The other components selected are builder's choice. A person can get a Seasonic PSU with a longer warranty for about the same price on sale.

This is a "what if" scenario. I trying to see what we could build under ~$1000, although by using Linux we could spend another ~$60 to ~$80 on the i5-8400.

So there's about $155 left that could be used for better video card, more RAM, monitor, etc.

If a person needs it, sure. However, DDR4 is at all-time-highs right now, so it would only make sense if it's needed. I "only" have 8GB in my desktop right now because of prices, and it's not hurting me at all. I personally would use some of the leftover money to buy a bigger SSD.

Well to be honest I am waiting a few years to save up some money and hoping that prices will fall on both DDR4 memory and SSDs by the time I build. My current rig is good enough for now.

Agree on the 8400, easier to put in more ram later than to change cpu, and when you pay for z370 you might as well get a 6core so it makes a little more sense. 8gb ram painful in a new build but so is buying 16gb at the current prices. For a budget build 8gb is acceptable if it means getting a 8400 or 1060 in the machine, in my opinion. I'd keep the Corsair 200R though.
