Thoughts regarding the X-Box...

Am visititing the in-laws for the holidays and decided to rent an X-Box with my brother-in-law. We have both done alot of gaming and felt that this qualified us to see what all the X-Box fuss was about. We rented Gotham racing (or whatever it is called) and Halo.

While we thought Halo was interesting and had alot of potential we both agreed that we would prefer to play it on the PC. One funny thing we both noticed, was wierd faint glittering llights on darkenned textures. Whats that about? In this game we found the controls large and clumbsy and did not see them as an improvement on the mouse and keyboard. Perhaps we may have felt differently if our background was not with the PC.

Gotham racing, we agreed, was a dog. The racing was unrealistic, the play modes were boring, and the graphics were terrible.

Regarding the actual X-box itself. The unit seems slow - load time are PC-like or worse, and in some games (i.e., halo co-operative match during intense fighting) the framerates a bit of a chug. Also, the unit is a large pig, bigger than a DVD player, but slightly smaller than a mini-tower.

All I can say is that we were ill-impressed with this thing - especially at $600-a-pop here in Canada.

Cheers,
N

an Xbox is a low end computer... thats about it... they are just calling it Xbox so that when people make games for it they know exactly what hardware to tweak it for. its a Nvidia nForce based chipset with graphics running a P3 733MHz CPU, 64mb Ram and a 10gb Hard drive. i dont know what there is to be impressed about. it has its own mini OS and file system.

in term of tech specs , it might be more superior by cripple by the os hahah just kidding.. i dont own one but I bought one for the boss's kids with a few games...

anyway I saw halo at the stores.. 2 player playing it split screen, it was so slow.. like slower then me playing cs with a matrox g400...

dunno what the fuss is all about...

Aside from Napalm who actually tried it... i really wish the rest of the posters knew what the hell they were talking about... what a shame...

its all a matter of personal preference... i happen to like my xbox but I dont blast others who own PS2's and GC's... hell i'm eager to try other systems just to play great games... remember its not about the consoles.. its about the games. I just wish some people would just realize this.

Mind all you OS naysayers, remember the Dreamcast? Yes, the one selling for <50 dollars, guess what operating system it uses. MICROSOFT WINDOWS CE. Just because it has a stripped down version of an OS doesn't mean the problems will be inherited, and this is Win2k, not 98.

The number of Xbox units sold speak for themselves.

for 50.00 the DC is the buy of the year in terms of hardware.
what a great system.
xbox....i like it,but not enough to buy it right now.not enough games i want to play on it.I found Halo to be very impressive but alas thats one title.
need more variety, this will only come with age.

While its true that DC ran WinCE most games booted themselves and did not rely on the underlying WinCE OS... In any case though... you're right, it was there!

I'm really starting to get impressed by the games for PS2 (either coming soon or already here)... like GTA3, FFX, Devil may cry, etc... I hope that soon XBox has games of this quality (it has some good games already but we can never have enough ).

So true, so true... seems people are excited about xbox... I, for one, believe that there is enough room in the Video Game market for at least 3 players...

I agree!! I REALLY like it when people play a demo (or see someone playing a demo) for 15mins in a store and then start posting like they know what they are talking about!

Yes, Halo is not as fast paced as QIII but the game runs at a steady and satisfying frame rate. If you jump from QIII and onto Halo, it looks like the game is playing in slow motion. But once you get used to the pace, the game gets VERY addicting. Halo is a freakin' AWESOME game but you'll have to give it time to develope (about 2 hour or so). You first have to get used to the pace, then the gamepad. As far as I'm concerned, there is NO better gamepad suited for a FPS. Yes, I would rather have a keyboard/mouse too but the XBox controller will do just fine once you get used to it. As far a Project Gotham, ya, it is cool for awhile but I don't like it much. If you want to check out some cool games, check out NHL Hitz 2002, NFL Fever 2002, and DOA3. These are some BEAUTIFUL looking games. DOA3 is an AWESOME looking fighting game, and ALL fighting games should be played on a console, period! Sports games are others that are best played on a BIG TV and a console. This Christmas my brother and I had a BLAST playing NHL Hitz, NFL Fever AND DOA3!! We also played Munch's Oddysee which is a very cool game too but it may not be a game that people in here would be interested in. The XBox has some of the BEST games that came out with a console's launch. The XBox is freakin' AWESOME and I couldn't be happier with it. There is also NO PC game that can touch DOA3's graphics and for $299, I find it to be a bargain.

Thanks for posting your impressions. I only got to fool around with it for 30 mins. I didn't like the Xbox controller.

The XBox load times aren't bad, very short actually. I own an XBox.

Halo is good, it takes time to adjust to the controls though.

You = idiot. The XBox will be able to have games that look better than PC because every XBox has the same hardware, unlike a PC. On a PC game designers have to support low-end systems. I have a High-end PC and an Xbox.

LOL Your a moron. Completely, a serious moron, your a troll for that matter.

Name any race car game with better graphics from *ANY* platform... Good luck, GCR is the best ever to date.

Xbox is no replacement for a PC, but it sure is a very nice console. The graphics are MUCH better than anything the PC has seen. GCR and DAO3 are proof of that.

Load times are not long. PS2 and GameCube take just as long, if not longer. PC load times? Well we all know PCs take a long time to load a game. Ever loaded up AVP2? It takes around 10 seconds on a very fast system.

Your statement has me pissed off. You lack intelligence. You should be banned from this forum for moronic trolling. Your review is not even reastlic.

It's called get a new TV. Zenith 12" might be part of your problem.

In this game we found the controls large and clumbsy and did not see them as an improvement on the mouse and keyboard.

Oh and a keyboard is not Large? you must have the special small "CTRL-ALT-DEL" keyboard because your computer is extremly unstable, I mean it's no wonder, you built it. On top of that, it's called a game console. Ever heard of one? Yeah time to come out of that cave you troll.

Halo does not slow down in split screen multiplayer. After all your retarded statements, I am curious to know if you even tested out an X-box... Or did you simple make stuff up? Who cares about the size? Oh.... thats right you live in a 4X4 apartment.... Not enough space for it eh? I bet the price is right.

All I can say is that we were ill-impressed with this thing - especially at $600-a-pop here in Canada.

Ahhh..... Canadian... This explains it all.

Xbox aint perfect that is for sure. But your pathetic analysis should embaress your entire country.

You obviously have a different opinion on the Xbox, and that's fine, but do you really need to insult the guy, his nationality, and say he should be banned just because his opinion differs from yours? I think you should try the decaf next time...

You should be one to talk Insade3d... and you know what I am talking about....

Canadians are fine with me, it's called a joke. I don't LOVE the xbox, I just think people need to be honest with a review and not write up some BS. Fact is that the XBOX is a console and his gripes with it are console related. His gripes can be applied to EVERY console ever made. He is a troll, simple as that.

I have played with an X-box for a few hours (next door neighbor got it for xmas) and it IS laggy. The graphics are awesome though but what bugs me is the reaction time between pressing the buttons and something actually happening is quite high. The controller is OK, not horrible but it could be better. The GC I bought for my bro seemed speedy by comparison.

Uhhh.... Possebly the menu selection is that way, but not the games.

I own an Xbox and a GameCube. First of all the gamecube is perfect for 10 years old and under. The graphics are ok, but far behind the Xbox. As far as being laggy in game, not at all. Neither of them are.

My wife wanted a gamecube so she got one for Xmas. We tried two games so far Pikman and Luigi's mansion. Both seem to be great games and Pikman seems to be a great original style of game. One thing we did notice was that we never noticed a load time AT ALL...never saw a "now loading" screen ever. I'm actually kinda impressed with the system, seems to be of great quality and well built and kinda makes my PS2 look like a thrown together peice of junk.

Ive got an XBOX also.

I love HALO & its the 1st time Ive felt a FPS on a console had great control & didnt make me wish I had my trusty keyboard & mouse.
Graphics in HALO are top notch, no glittering or flickering on my Sony Wega.

As soon as the XBOXs game library catches up to the amount of quality titles that the PS2 has seen this year, my XBOX will be used more. ( thats typical for a new console)

I have 3 pcs, Dreamcast, XBOX & a PS2, id own a gamecube too if it had games I wanted to play.

Do I think the XBOX is a good gaming system? YES.

I love my xbox and i like my friends ps2. This was my first console i bought since the PSX first came out. I think that the xbox's game library will grow strong with time. It was a tough decision at first as to which one to get, the deciding factor was 2 things:
Online gaming is ready to go outta the box.
HDTV utilize's it.
I figure i can trade my buddy in a month or so fer a couple weeks. That way i can play MGS2 and GTA3 (the main 2 games i wanna play). From what i heard, gta3 will be coming in march for the xbox.
So either way, you come out a winner, cept for me personally, I'd rather be playing in high res on a hdtv online.

BTW, the controller is a little weird to get used to, but definatley managable.
