I consider myself very lucky to have the job I do. And the job I'm starting next week.

I worked retail for a very, very long time, and while I don't think the fast food people will get the kinds of raises they want, they have my sympathies.

My own father has picked on me for being "too polite" to McDonald's employees.

Doesn't work like that. Raises aren't guaranteed. I recently talked with a guy who was a line cook at Chili's. He started at $9.00/hour and after five years he made $11.25.

25% increase over 5 years.
Average of 5% / year.

Most people in the current economy do not get that amount of a raise year after year.

Seems like he is advancing well in his profession. Now maybe he needs to step it up a notch to be a different level of cook if he wants to cook.

What these fools here don't realize is how thin the line is between "skilled worker" and mcdonalds employee. Say they outsourced your job to India and your "skill" becomes obsolete in a moments notice. But you're 40 years old and haven't done anything but that specific skill. Or you get into a wreck in your car and suffer some mental damage and can't do the work you use to do. Now you're the guy behind the counter that is looked down upon by these holier than thou computer techs.
Yeah I agree these guys don't deserve 50 grand a year. Not even saying they should get 30k. They should at least get enough they can have an apartment, a car, pay for their own food etc..

Oh give up with the "holier than thou", and "you think your better than them" garbage. It's easy to start painting people as villains instead of arguing with them.

Most of the techies here worked in fast food or retail at one point in their life, myself included. That doesn't change the fact that these are supposed to be entry level jobs.

So entry level jobs means we can demean them and pay them wages that can't even give them enough to pay for their own food? All the while some greedy ceo stuffs his Swiss bank accounts or buys his 4th house. Learn a little humility and compassion for your fellow humans you heartless troll.

Its walmarts own fault.

Why isn't this happening at other minimum wage jobs? Because walmart is so deathly afraid of unions, they bring it on themselves by putting the idea into peoples heads by being paranoid about unions. It makes people think about unionizing. Then when they really do try to bargain collectively, they all have to stand together.

Walmart is probably screwed.

Kinda sounds like me. In my real-life encounters, I always treat people better than they deserve to be treated. I'm always thinking of their convenience. Even if my order is wrong, I usually don't bother to get it corrected. On the other hand, I know people who would demand another plain hamburger because they saw a piece of an onion on the outside of the wrapper.

Why should an entry level job; requiring no skill set; demand/receive more than their value.

That CEO moved up in the world; became educated and proved his worth to the employer.

Are you sure about that? Sure, there are some good people that work at McD's. There are a lot of worthless shitheads too.
Just like every profession in life. Just because mommy and daddy sent you to techie school that doesn't give you the right to look down on others. You have no idea what those people have been through. Hell working the counter at mcd's could be a hell of an accomplishment for them. Maybe they are slow or came out of homelessness and are taking the first job they could find. You have no idea. I'd say the guy that was beat his whole life by his family and thrown out at 16 years old would be doing damn fine for himself just being a functioning member of society and working at mcd's. I'd say he came alot further in life than some pampered boy whose parents sent him to school and still hasn't learned what it is to be a man.

Yeah, it's SUPPOSED to be entry level, instead fast food is a parking lot. If entry-level actually meant "crappy job you work your way through" instead of "crappy job you're stuck with when there aren't alternatives" I think there wouldn't be much legitimate complaining. However, in my experience, people only escape such entry-level work by getting lucky on snagging a completely unrelated job, not by earning their way up the ladder.

It's called being a decent human being. If your plate is full already why not throw off a few more crumbs to those that actually need it.

I'm sure you were given some breaks in life at some point. Or maybe you weren't and that's why you are the heartless self important idiot you portray here.

Should the company pay him more than his work is worth?

What annoys me most with these fast food people wanting to make $15 is that they expect higher pay for no hard work. If you're a hard worker you can easily move up at places like McDonalds or Walmart but these people expect higher pay for being lazy.

I took a menial labor warehouse job making $9 because I needed something because I wasn't finding work in my industry, and in less than two years I'm making more than 2.5 times that amount because I busted my ass, didn't take days off, did whatever was needed to show my worth to the company. All those people that are complaining that they deserve higher pay at those places would have gotten it a long time ago if they just worked hard and would have been moved up and already been making those wages. I have no sympathy for the lazy.

Love how all the tech monkeys here think they are so skilled and look down on everyone else. lol. Get a life trolls. You are no better than the guy behind the counter at mcdonalds. You're just lucky mommy and daddy sent you to tech school so you could sit behind a desk all day and do nothing and pretend you're something special.

Now I know how you think you have the thighs of an NFL pro.

Damn bro, get some skills.

I had to pay for all 7+ years of COLLEGE.

You just never grew up.

Here's how I feel about minimum wage jobs- it's not slavery. You're not being forced to work there. You CAN get an education, skills, and get a better job. If a lot of people did that, McDonalds workers would be in demand and by default the pay would go up.

Instead, people that do the least preparation in bettering themselves expect to be paid well. It doesn't work like that. Anyone can work at McDonalds. Anyone can also become an auto mechanic, welder, dental assistant, truck driver, plumber, electrician, construction worker, receptionist, etc with a minimal amount of school and training.

If you don't like the pay, get another job people.

People who work at McDonals aren't what I'd call lazy, unskilled? perhaps. But the 3 by me are consistently pretty packed and they have a timer in the drive thru where if it goes above 60 seconds the manager starts getting in workers ass. They work pretty much non stop for minimum wage. With the amount of customers they have a day I can't imagine the employees have much, if any time to lazily stand around doing nothing.

I'm not saying they deserve to make $15 an hour, but it's definitely not a job a lazy person would be able to keep.

You've obviously never worked fast food if you think it's a minimum wage job. It's fast paced and constant hard work. It's definitely worth more than $7 a hour.

To the employer, it is not. Period.

The value those employees provide is not worth more than they are paid. If they demand too much, an automated machine starts to look more and more appealing.

Not a lot of jobs out there. There are a lot of good jobs out here going to illegals. Add to that they are sending the rest of them overseas it's not just as easy as you make it to get a better job. You could get the training and still go nowhere.
