Congrats man.
That samsung b ram latency and perf...
3600x4 c16 on ryzen that i didnt expect.
It expensive but alliviate most of the disadvantages with this platform. Way to go it seems.

The cpu actually looks cheap. Lol. First 1000 usd ever to do so as i can recall.
I like the perf, temp and power at stock on a cheap cooler. But you have to put aside for the ram. No doubt.

It's set to AUTO but runs around 1.34 and up to 1.41 under load. Have not run a real stability test on it. TBH, don't trust the cooler for long runs! The plate isn't covering the IHS and dies completely.

I did try 1.3 vcore manual and it locked up in the middle of cinebench testing.
That's going to be a trend with so many cores on a relatively small package.
Wait until Intel releases their 18 core part! The only way that's going to o/c past 4GHz stable under load is with a really good block and probably need sub ambient coolant!

Even stock these are nothing to sneeze at just on brute force alone.
I guess for a 4.0-4.1 OC you need 1.35-1.36, like Mark.
Which cooler are you using?

Before I go to bed, I would like to make a point to all reading this, With a "good" hardware config(3600 ram), and a $120 AIO cooler I now appear to have beaten (per anj2208) "a 7900x @ 5.982GHz on LN2 (3333) from hwbot." with my 3408 score. If this is correct, even I am astounded, especially since I did this on a 10 minute OC. (4.1 ghz @ 1,35 vcore).

Please reply with any CONTRUCTIVE comments.
Really great! Ryzen usually needs +1.4v for 4.0. it seems these TR are indeed Zen golden picks

My results have been similar to others. I don't think the spread is as great as Intel when it comes to the silicon lottery. What I'm thinking here is it's boiling down to how effective our coolers are. (pun certainly not intended!)

I'm using the Thermaltake Riing RGB 360 AIO. It has decent radiator area to handle TDP of this cpu. However, the coldplate is machined for a completely different platform. It's quite concave. Even with liberal application of the best TIM, it's simply not effective to adequately cool this processor with 16 cores. Some are going to heat excessively resulting in lockups at 4GHz with a sustained load. Yes it will pass Cinebench tests. But I don't run that all day with my computer! LOL

When running the realbench 2.54 suite (which has a great stability test btw), even the benchmark at the end that includes heavy multi tasking will freeze the system. Usually when the OC is too high a BSOD occurs. It simply freezes and needs a reset. The reset button always works unlike a hard lock requiring a 5 second push of the power button or a power supply disconnect. That is why I suspect it's got a core or two getting way too hot.

Either wait for a real water block, the Cooler Master AIO that was just announced or even the Noctua air solution that has a full coverage cold plate.

TBH, at higher levels of OC approaching the limit of the CPU, with 16 cores and TDPs way over 250+ watts, liquid is going to be needed for those that use their systems to crunch/fold or render projects that take all night to run.

For that reason alone, I plan to run at stock until a suitable cooler is hitched to this thing!

I broke 3400cb with 4GHz using the 4GHz OC profile in the Zenith BIOS. But for long term use with the current cooling solution it isn't stable.

As a hardcore overclocker, running stock seems to be a sin, but trust me at stock if you use this CPU as it was intended, you're still flying high above the others while consuming less energy.

Finally I must say the last time I spent $1k for an AMD chip was in 2005 for an FX60. I still have that CPU and board. At the time it was great compared to Intel's Netburst. Maybe this will have them scrambling for the next Conroe to dethrone them again. I suspect it's going to take a while. It's nice to have competition again!

Threadripper's Noctua air cooler made an appearance :

LOL, I love Steve but he really needs just a tad more polish on his video.. He just threw shit together on the board and didn't even give mention to the Noctua. It's not even listed on their site. I bumped into it by mistake. Steve ! Give the Noctua cooler a 5min video man... you're the only one w/ it. LMFAO

yeah, in MT tasks this thing is the king right now.

About coolers, Kyle Bennett (HardOCP) tested the same AIO, and he needed to mating the coldplate to obtain better cooling results https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/08/05/amd_ryzen_threadripper_coldplate_mounting_mating/

Fortunately, as you say, some TR specific coolers are already being announced. Aside the ones you mentioned, EK is now selling their TR water block https://www.ekwb.com/shop/
Enermax has launched their AIO solution too: http://www.enermax.com/home.php?fn=eng/product_a1&lv0=109&lv1=118

First benchmark@first overclock@4.0 ghz

Edit: Ouch overclocking from 3.6 tp 4.0@1.3 vcore put power from 680 to 900 watts !!! I may go back to stock

That is with both 1080TI's doing F@H@100% and 79c, taking vcore down

Edit 2: 1.25 vcore still stable, and 68c instead of 78c

GG, returning 850 and going to 1000W PSU. This is the kind of on the ground info i was hoping for.

lets hope he does a review soon! I think it will perform well, as usual with Noctua coolers

Yes I believe he lapped it for better fitment.
I like the EK block but I wish they had a full copper offering.
I'm still reluctant to try nickel as I was burned in the past with flaking plating.
However if I'm going to be stuck with nickel, might as well go full nickel upper and lower!
The supremes looked outstanding on my SR-2 system but I wound up replacing them with full copper due to corrosion issues due to Edy's faulty nickel plating.

It will be interesting to see how well it does with a proper liquid cooled solution!

do you have two 1080ti too? that consumption is with both cards running at full load
Yeah, i'll likely have cards with a similar TDP (accounting for 250W a pop max). That's (2x250W) 500W on vidya alone. Then we circle back to threadripper and we account for 3600 RAM which is going to suck down +13-20W extra for ram. I have seen a properly OC'd threadripper suck 300W @4ghz across all cores on just the CPU package total when OC'd.

So, now.. Just on RAM/CPU/Vidya i'm @ 800 (500+300) Watts. Doesn't feel comfy having 50 watts of headroom (in case of 850w) for any other powered devices and also I have 2 more PCI-E slots that are empty. Disregarding the PCI-E slots, i'm simply at 800Watts easy just as you punched to 900Watts with ease. I'm hitting the limits of my PSU and I haven't even begun with a medium level build. Also, I have no clue what video cards might hit next year... So, i'm initiating a return on my 850 and buying a 1000. I wouldn't worry a single bit with a 1000W because there's a comfy amount of headroom.

I can't find a single review that pushed the video cards at the same time as the CPU and took down the power consumption. You did and it solidified that my fears were true.

well, then yeah, a 1000w PSU is fine for all that power

It's a shame that doesn't come in a 280mm size. The 360mm is nice, but a 280 might be easier to swing.

Markfw -- would be interesting to know how much the push-pull helps (as opposed to just one or the other) and also to what degree the 360 helps (vs just a 240 -- while not perfect, presumably you could just remove the last third of your fans). Going big out of the gate is definitely the way to start, but I'd love to know where the sweet spot is.

crazy performance... I'm just glad this gives much less incentive to buy SKL-X

AMD is trashing Intel for the time being... too bad we can't say the same with Vega/NVIDIA

Mark, can you run the Handbrake encoding test? http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=threads/benchmark-your-computer-with-handbrake-1-01-and-x265.2497224/

Some reviewers state Handbrake doesnt scale well with multiple cores, but its strange, because x264 or x265 are heavily multithreaded

It would be nice if you try 1.0.1 version, and the latest too, 1.0.7
Does 44 seconds sound right ?

Man those benchmarks are awesome! I decided to hold off just a bit until the Ek monoblock drops as I want my build to be PERFECT from the get go. Also looks like the taichi is backordered for a while

Had to design and 3D print a custom mounting bracket for TR, because there simply isn't any coolers (besides the Asetek ones) available.
Some of the cooler manufacturers I sent inquiries to hadn't even heard about AMD SP3 socket.

The bracket is for DeepCool Assassin II, which is probably the best air cooler for TR despite it wasn't even designed for it. Thanks to it's 60x45mm contact surface, it provides 100% coverage of the cores themselves and 78% coverage of the heatspreader.

I am backing down the OC until a better cooler is available. On the 4.1 ghz handbrake test, one core got to 97. sent down to 4.0 and it completed in 43 seconds (throttling ?) and 88c.
Going to try cinebench again
