I've made a lot of critical comments in this thread.. I just want everyone to know I'm not just mouthing off and am actually invested. So, Here's my stake :

Also, I fell for the (wait for vega) meme.. However, I was largely infuriated by the way the product was launched, the lackluster drivers/software support, and the lack of proper detailing (i.e : is fp16 available to compute flows?).

I was all for supporting AMD again but the Radeon group is a whole other bag. So, it will be threadripper and nvidya : https://twitter.com/nvidiageforce/status/895746289589039104?lang=en
Team green/team red

Maybe if the Radeon group spent more time writing drivers/software for features they marketed and legitimate markets instead of :
https://cointelegraph.com/news/ethe...new-software-for-blockchain-compute-workloads
they'd have a competitive platform vs. Nvidia.

What do I have planned for this build? Something that changes everything

On a long list of things... Miners, I'm coming for you.

(Breaker of chains)

How are you "coming" at the miners? CPUs aren't really efficient miners, no matter how powerful they are. That's why GPU prices are so crazy right now. I fail at interpreting your context. I started mining ZEC because of a thread I saw here on AT.

TCTL isnt a real temp, tdie is, in my book 63ºc full load for a 16/32 cpu is pretty good

Pretty dissapointing results with the Noctua U14S: https://www.computerbase.de/2017-08/noctua-nh-u14s-u12s-u9-tr4-test/

88.1 & 90.1°C (tCTL) in Blender and in Prime95 29.1 (which doesn't even stress the CPU properly).
The chances are that my 120mm AIO was actually better than that, because it held 95°C tCTL at 3.7GHz / 1.150V in Prime95 28.10 (~220W dissipation).
My 360 AIO with 6 fans can do WAY better than that. Get the Artic Cooling Freezer 360, and use all 6 fans, its doing just fine. Make sure you put paste over the entire cooling unit, even over the screws.....

Its only $120 shipped from newegg, and is usable after that on some other system. I was NOT going for months without getting to enjoy my threadripper.....

NOTE: Now I am NOT going with that Noctura, and NOT going custom water. When I see something better than what I have at a decent price THEN I will switch. (the custom water is not entirely out yet....)

I'm not too impressed by the fact that the heatsink can keep the CPU only 4.9°C (68°C or 95°C tCTL) below it's maximum rated temperature, at stock.

https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x
that max temp is referring to what? tdie, package...?

btw, Ive done two quick tests with Prime95 28.10 and 29.1 (about ten min each) with my Ryzen 1700X (at stock) and temps are the same, max 58.5ºC and 58.2ºC respectively. According to HWinfo64 cpu package power is about 20w higher with 28.10, but it doesnt affect to the temps reached.

tDie.
68 + 27 = 95°C (tCTLMax).

Try using fixed FFT size on both to eliminate any variance.
Custom -> 128 / 128, Run FFTs in place. 28.10 results in ~9% higher power draw than the newer builds.

I'll try it. What happens when that max temp is reached? I suppose throttling...if so, is it inmediately? or there is some temp margin yet? how much frec throttles? have you done some tests about it? sorry for the bunch of questions, but its an interesting subject to know.

On the other hand, about these Noctua coolers perf, we dont know ambient temp and other conditions, and there are other options to improve cooling perf, like adding a second fan, or more powerful fans for full load sessions. Anyways, we have to keep in mind these are 16/32 core monsters, so these air coolers do the job. Its almost a miracle that an old design cooler like these ones (dont forget they are based in coolers with years in market) maintain these monster under their limit. Perhaps the issue is other... manufacturers have to improve their cooling solutions, this multicore race *needs* it, imo.

Think software and information theory not hardware.
Memory hardness is an algorithm of old privy to being circumvented by algorithms of new

They'll have to become a glorified transactional service like paypal using efficient security protocols and non-compute intensive processes while being regulated like every other commerce system or die. They use proof of work and memory hardness to stave off regulation and correct valuation. They've exploited society's precious resources to support a ponzi scheme at the cost of everyone who buys computer hardware. Everything eventually comes full circle.

Look closely at the marketing and packaging of threadripper

Spread the word to your mining friends...

I happen to be getting MSI and GIgabyte x399 boards. Need to decide which one I should keep.....Gigabyte one seems to be getting decent reviews so far. I am yet to see any MSI ones.

@The Stilt: I tried Prime with those settings... results are the same than before between both versions: a little higher max temp with these settings, but similar temps with both versions, 59.2ºC (29.1) vs 59.5ºC (28.10), higher cpu package power with 28.10, about 23w (102w, 29.1; 125w 28.10). Dont know how accurate can be hwinfo64 with power consumption values though

Jason, I would recommend looking at the MSI and Gigabyte support forums to see what kind of issues are cropping up with these boards. I have the MSI board and here are two problems that I've experienced firsthand:

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=291025.0

It's still early and not unexpected to have rough spots with a new platform. I'm personally reserving judgement until another BIOS revision or two.

Have you flashed the bios? If so did you use the usb stick method? Apparently it can be done with live update 6 but I don't have the "get latest bios" option.

I just pulled the trigger on the 1950X and an MSI motherboard. I opted for 32gb (4x8) DDR4 3200. There are a few DDR4 3333 kits floating around out there that do with 4 16GB sticks and the QVL for Gigabyte says they support XMP. It didn't specify the XMP speed though, and I ended up not going with the Gigabyte board because it was out of stock. It was also INSANELY expensive. Almost $800. Instead I went with the MSI board. I read that a beta BIOS fixes issues reported by many. The board, RAM, and 1TB Samsung 960 EVO will be here tomorrow and the CPU will be here Thursday. I have a Thermaltake WATER 3.0 Dual Riing that I can use for now. Later I will invest in a better cooler once more options are out. What PS is everyone using? My current solution is an EVGA 850 GQ, 80+ GOLD 850W. Is that sufficient? This system has a single 1080ti.

Just picked up a 500gb 960 Evo at my microcenter for $185 which I think is a steal. Should fit in nicely with my other SSDs for the TR build.
Someone wanted a pic of thread-ripper at microcenter, well here it is They had a few more on display as well.

Weee !!! He did it .. Retail pictures.
*saved .. The next place I move will be determined by if a microcenter/frys/harbor-freight are nearby.

I used the USB method to update to the current official BIOS. I haven't looked into Live Update 6.

So you dowwnloaded the latest bios. Copied onto the root of the USB plugged it in. Switched to m-flash in the bios and it worked from there? did you have to do anything else? Because I am not having much luck.

Could be user error of course....

I have multiple computers. I also have a Taichi (ASRock) I downloaded the most recent bios to a USB stick from another computer. During boot, I pressed the F6 (I think thats it) and then updated the bios. No sweat. I only did that as a precautionary measure.

Is that a security cable? For a product in a display?
