If I were to building a TR system (I wont, its too much for me ) I would go all day to a Noctua U14S. It seems to be the equivalent to a NH-U14S which performs nicely
I bashed their poo colored fans and am still not a (fan) nor ever will be. However, it seems like its the route I have to go until this AIO Water cooling mess gets sorted. I Still want to see their heat dissipation specs updated for the threadripper customs so I have an idea of which one, among the three options, I should get.

Woke up or rather didn't sleep through the cooling revelations that well ... Almost shook me out of my pre-order. However, I'm holding steady for now. Saved by the poo !

Take a look at their TDP guide: the new socket TDP values are not listed, but you can check AM3 ratings since that socket featured 220W CPUs.

The U14S is good for 220W.
The U12S goes beyond 140W but does not reach 220W.
The U9S is only 125W, but the new TR4 model comes with one more heatpipe and an additional fan for push-pull config.

I expect all of them to handle 180W, while U14 will go beyond stock easily.

I may get the U14S after it comes out (not anywhere in stock yet) and compare the temps with the freezer 360 that is coming today.

The fans are indeed ugly. But I don't have glass on my case anyway. And never bling things up, so they will never be seen.

Can't wait to see this. I also wish you could see a per core temperature breakdown. I'm more specifically interested in the temps that the edge of the dies reach that aren't covered by the AIO water cooler's contact plate. That's where all the action is happening IMO.

I agree Noctua fan color scheme sux heavily. Fortunately, any standard 140mm fan fits nicely. I have installed a Corsair ML-140 Pro LED Red on a D15S because my case is windowed (Fractal Design Define R5), and looks cool

Get the U12s/U14s and slap on some Gentle Typhoons, or Noctua's own IndustrialPPC 120mm which is black. Though 140mm GTs are harder to get.

Can you post pics please? I thought the U14s has weird mounting for the fan (120mm mount holes for 140mm fan) thus needs their special fan :

I do have a 140mm corsair fan I'd love to put to use. So, please post pics if you can. I'm not sure how you got their mounting clip to work on that corsair 140mm as the through holes are much further out

here it is (sorry for the bad quality )
Dat strap
Dat forcefit
So, you just stretched the tie down clamp to fit up to the 140mm point? haha
The noctua heatsinks do come with an extra set of these though correct? the metal tie down..

Here's GN looking at the possible cooling issue. Will need full testing of course but looks like dedicated designs would definitely provide better coverage. Actual rotational orientation of the AIO cooler plates should definitely be a factor here.

yep, without any special effort

and yes, at least this D-15S includes two fan clips sets

That was great ! Can't wait to see the real results.

I was getting ready to defend the Noctua fan coolers until I realized mine are in a box somewhere. There something with the NH D14 & 65W TDP CPU combo that makes fans... optional

OK, everybody ready for a laugh ? I looked up an old purchase trying to decide if threadripper was the most expensive CPU I ever bought. Well, not really. Here is from 7/2/2004

2 x AMD Opteron 248 SledgeHammer Single-Core 2.2 GHz Socket 940 OSA248AUBOX Processor Item #: N82E16819103428
$1,378.00 ($689.00 ea)
4 x Mushkin Enhanced Pro Series 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM ECC Registered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory Model 991125 Item #: N82E16820146211
$616.00 ($154.00 ea)

So my threadripper (16 core, 32 threads, and 32 gig of memory) and memory is only $1400 vs $2000 for 2 cores and 2 gig of memory. in 2004.

Oh, and my motherboard is $350 vs that one was $500.

An $2000 was a lot more money than it is today.

Ah yes, the good 'ol Opteron days. Do you remember the 939 Opteron 165 craze? Or even the 3700+ San Diego's? And even the DFI LanParty UT4 voltage mods, etc? I ate ramen for a few weeks because of that.

Ah flashbacks to the good old days of AMD. Hoping Ryzen and Threadripper is the second coming of those days.

I still have a 170 opteron, and an X2 3800.

Those were some confusing times. We had an Nvidia chipset/board (nForce 4), mixed with an AMD processor. Good stuff though. I remember when I sold mine, and used some good 'ol fashioned OCZ memory.

Interesting comments about the cooling. When I bought my threadripper there was a list of compatible AIO coolers on the sellers site and the H105 I have was on it. My current build has a 5820k overclocked @ 4.4Ghz (it wouldn't go passed that and remain stable) and the H105 kept it nice and cool. So I am not concerned. Where I live vendors cannot sell inoperative products. Crazy I know.

There is so much FUD around these new AMD products in particular vega (although that may not be entirely misplaced). There is no question that threadripper will deliver. Otherwise I would have bought a 7900X........Because I don't care about who made the CPU. Just that it delivers and if it's good value for money then that's even better. I am not looking to throw my cash away after all.

Looking forward to seeing the builds and building mine.......

From what I've seen, and AMD providing Asetech brackets, I would kinda think not having complete spreader contact will not be an issue, even with shorter coverage.

But I will wait to be sure with what others say. The heat spreader should do the job quite well IMO spreading out heat even without the extreme corner area's covered.

Either way, we should know fairly soon. But I could see there being a possible concern. AMD should at least say something though about it it either way.

I think everything will be OK dude. If there are any issues related to this I will just return mine for a full refund. We have consumer protection laws and stuff here and as I alluded to in my previous post selling inoperative proudcts opens both the vendor and the retailer up to being prosecuted by the federal government. However in my opinion there won't be a single issue with the threadripper. That's why I pre-ordered one.

I agree buddy. Don't think there will be any real problems in that regard. AMD would have done something different at the very least. At least I would think so for a corp with some riding on existing solutions.

But we will find out soon enough either way.

This is BY FAR my most expensive CPU purchase lol. I haven't dropped more than $500, let alone $1000 on a CPU. I couldn't fathom dropping this much a while ago, not sure how TR changed this
