I did 4.1@1.36 vcore, but the temps were out of sight (97c peak)I might get a designed-for-Threadripper Heatkiller or similar block when they release... the EK retrofit seems to be less than optimal. I just did a torture test @ 4GHz 1.4V (probably requires significantly less voltage, just wanted to cook it) and it was already at 60°C after 5 minutes AIDA64 torture. I ended the test then because it's clear my slim 360mm + EK TR4 combo (all I can fit in my Air 540) isn't going to cut it for extreme OCing.
I'll see how much voltage I can trim off to be stable @ 4GHz OC all cores, as well as how far I can max OC. If it's worth throwing 1.4V at the chip (i.e. 4.2GHz OC or something) then I would consider getting a new case + 2x480mm rads. If not, I'd be happy with 4GHz at 1.3V or whatever it ends up requiring.

The insane thermals is why I decided to get the thickest 480mm rad out there as I want to get a serious OC on it.
thats great! I never hoped it would be stable @4.0 with so low vcore. What about temps, ambient room etc?
Ambient temp is 26C-27C (I have thermostat set at 79F). Cooling is via EK TR4 waterblock to a slim 360mm radiator mounted inside the case, 3x120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-14 fans @ 1200RPM in a pull configuration.
As I'm sitting here typing this with a few apps open (but idle) I am sitting at 31.9°C. Under light web and desktop usage I top out at 45.0°C.
Stress testing is a different story. If I torture test using AIDA64 I can go above 65°C and it's clear I'm hitting the limits of my custom loop/EK retrofitted water block (I may retry thermal paste application, it's possible I used too much).
temps sound good to me Ambient temp is "high" (well, compared to the one i am here its cold, i'm 32ºC right now i hate summer for this, its insane xD).
EDIT: have you checked when begins throttling?
I have not hit temps high enough to throttle.
But I'll likely end up buying a new case and using at least double the radiator surface area just in case (I have a 420mm radiator I can add to the loop).
Does throttling begin based on tctl readings, or is that just for fan pwm? Keeping temp readings under 68C is going to be really hard.
Keeping positive pressure in a case exhausting that much is sort of tough -- are you going with something like a 900D where you can run left-to-right underneath? It almost feels like I should buy a small case for the motherboard proper, and then a couple of filters to surround a couple of external, free-standing radiators ;^/
I assume it is based on tDIE, as tCTL appears to be for fan curves (and there is a option in the MSI BIOS to choose between different water/air profiles). Like I said, I haven't noticed any throttling so I can't comment on the temperature you have to hit to actually throttle.
Debating whether I go "one step" up and get something like the TT X71 which has room for a bottom chamber 360mm rad + 420mm rad in the front... or go for the utterly ridiculous, and humongous TT Tower 900.

I have that motherboard, and I have that ram. Just to be sure, update to the latest bios (mine went from 1.0 to 1.3) but it works perfectly at rated spacs, and I have 2 of those kits for 4 sticks total, 32 gig.Damn, that heatkiller block looks nice. But I would likely have to wait until the 10th or later to receive it so I'll play with the EK for now.
Just had my friend pick up the taichi, they just had 1 left in stock Won't be able to pick it up until next weekend though. In the meantime, just ordered some RAM https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232437 and the EK block and some dual reservoir mounts.
Hoping I don't have any issues running it at 3600 CL16.
Question to you guys with custom water setups. Would this kit be a good "starter" ? Could I simply add like a 360 rad in line or parallel with the included 240 ? And I assume the new EK water block you all keep talking about would work with this kit ? I would just love to buy it all in one kit, even if I had to enhance it.
