Looking to build a TR/TR2 machine myself as a network render machine plus other goodies all-in-one. Hopefully RAM prices go down.

I purchased the components for my TR rig in august last year. Since then the exact same RAM kit I bought from the same seller has gone up 200$. Yikes.

Seriously that is crazy.

Threadripper number 3 build in progress ! My memory, and my Enermax TR4 are due to arrive tomorrow. I have the define S case, the AX1200i PSI, a Samsung 960 nvme (250 gig) and a 128 gig adata XPC nvme, the X399 Taichi motherboard all assembled. The problem is the two 1080ti FTW3 cards I will not may $1400 each for, so for the time being I will be using a really small video card just to get it running. Notice the home made heatsink on the 960. Its an old chipset Heatsink, cut up to fit the nvme. Attached with thermal pads and zip ties. The memory is 3200 CAS 14 samsung b-die Gskill

EDIT: I just snagged a 6696 (1080TI FTW3) for $820 and $20 shipping, so my baby will have at least one card !!!

Now that GPU passthrough is hacked up to be slightly working, threadripper is far more interesting. 32 threads is just hard to pass up. Not sure the wait for TR2 is even worth it. I'll be looking to upgrade my unraid server soon.

Just a heads up the new release of unraid can still have quite a few issues. My TaiChi + 1950x had all sorts of PCIe bus errors in version 6.4-release, enough that it would cause my LSI/Avago HBA to lock up and messed up my array... Passthrough was a whole other headache, hopefully it gets sorted soon; I'm looking for an excuse to jump camp again for Threadripper 2 or whatever they call it.
There are a few threads like this one for different distros, though they aren't common; Threadripper + unraid in particular seems to be a pretty niche setup.

There is a reddit thread that gets updates from a guy at AMD every now and again too that may be worth following if you arent already:

Have you seen this yet?
https://lime-technology.com/forums/topic/62229-threadripper-ugly-patch/?page=2

Supposed to make things work. That's why I'm much more enthusiastic about TR/TR2. I want to get at least 2/3 gaming rigs out of my Threadripper build along with server processing.

I'd been following that as well, I never got around to testing it though. After the PCIe bus errors caused my array to drop I stopped trusting it and ordered new hardware. I have backups of course, but restoring many TBs of data sucks.
They are well on their way to implementing proper fixes, just wanted to make sure you were aware that things aren't "plug and play" at the moment.

No I thank you for that completely. That's very good to know. I wasn't sure whether to upgrade my existing server, or add a brand new server.
I guess for sure now, I'll b e adding a brand new server so I can assure the array works with no data to lose.

Mad jelly of thee RAM you've got, jesus. Ram alone must have been killer.

Even though I doubt it will change much between TR1/TR2, I'm HOPING TR2 will make this easier, and AMD will work more to make sure GPU Passthrough works (Insanity they haven't done it already.)
Otherwise, I'll be getting an intel CPU which will suck since intel charges an insane amount for processors of this caliber in comparison to AMD.

Strange thing about passthrough is that people were getting Vega FE to work fine, and AMD initially lay blame elsewhere and cited its success with Vega as proof (in the reddit thread). Somethings I could pass through like my 4 port NIC, and some I couldn’t like a USB3 PCIe card; it was hit and miss all around. I couldn’t passthrough a 5870, 6670, or 6970 either, which were the only AMD cards I had available.

As for RAM, it wasn’t super terrible. It’s cheap G.Skill stuff that doesn’t even have heatspreaders, I refused to pay more than I needed to. It comes in handy for the VMs and Dockers though!

It works with Ryzen, that's what really irritates me. It's always like AMD is slightly trolling me it feels. Like Threadripper needs features like this to work. This is how you convert enthusiasts, and then how you convert those people who potentially manage networks/servers/etc to use your product.

My project is just too stupid for me to justifiy paying intel prices. AMD prices if they had the product working well, that would be easy for me to justify.

AMD is just so close to being easy for me to recommend on all fronts it's annoying.

I built a 1700x rig for a friend, and it was such a pleasant build; it’s been bulletproof for him.
I think in the long term they will get it sorted, much like the initial RAM issues they were having. This stuff may even be working with EPYC, I haven’t done that reasearch though.

Man, almost getting Jelly at all of those sweet, sweet, TR4 builds. Almost.

I'm soldiering on with my Ryzen R5 1600 rigs, I don't think that they were a bad purchase, although if I had held off on buying, I could have probably afforded a TR rig. So pretty with all those RGB ring fans!

Great stuff!

Well... My old venerable x58 system's motherboard looks like it died today after hanging onto life for the last 6 months, slowly losing access to RAM slots 1 at a time...

So I think it only fitting it would be replaced by a Threadripper build

I had looked at components last fall, but got distracted. Time to put a list of components together and this thread is great for that. RAM prices though, are seriously not. Only components I'm reusing will be the PSU & video cards which will be good enough for the work it will do.

Make sure your PSU has two 8 pin mobo power connectors as most X399 boards require them if you OC.

Also, it has to be new enough to support "haswell" class CLU's or it won't boot. Also, make sure the memory is on the QVL or supported memory list for the motherboard. I just built number 3 threadripper, but it only boots at 2133 even though I thought it was samsung b-die, since its 3200 cl 14. I can't even get 2400 out of it. 2 sets of new memory coming, over $1000 for the 2. I want to be sure one will run at rated speed.

Ryzen/Threadrippers run much faster with high speed memory. 3200 to 3600 is what I recommend for "full speed" performance.

Yes, TY for pointing that out. I'm reusing an EVGA G2 1300 which does have two 8 pin CPU power connectors so that part is covered. This has been my favorite PSU to use in high-end systems, it's been rock stable in all the systems I've built with them.

Knowing me probably not at first, but eventually I'll OC the system to see how far it'll go.

It's cool Larry, let them beta test for us.
We'll get TR2. Polished up and all beautiful. They'll still have their used up old TRs....
We'll say look at that bug, it's fixed here, oh I love my 400-500mhz too!!!!

Then Mark builds his fourth/fifth/6th TR rig and we'll remember what peasants we are

Clearly Threadripper has monstrous legs on it...
Is it possible to somehow unlock one of those disabled sectors?
Imagine having a 24 core TR (or 32 of if you get lucky).

No, there are two functioning dies, and two blanks for assembly. Need the blanks so they can go down the same line as Epyc.
