So I have a bunch of teens (13 - 15 yr old boys & girls) coming over this weekend ... and movie watching is what they enjoy. I don't allow any of those raunchy movies that target impressionable teens. The kids do enjoy spy thrillers.

So I am thinking about this old movie "Three days of the Condor" ... I remember seeing it several years ago and I remember liking it. Unfortunately, I don't recall much more than that.

I notice that its rated "R". Can someone tell me why ?

Sex ? Violence ? Language ?

If anyone remembers specific instances ... please let me know. Thanks !!!

????

There are many gun shootings several of them show blood, three of them happen to women, one of them is at point blank range into a mans skull.

I don't remember any PG-13 movies that show people getting shot in the head with blood coming out. Lots of people get shot execution style.

As for the sex, I don't even remember the scene that they're referring to, I wouldn't call it raunchy at all.

FWIW I loved this movie and would have no problem showing it to 13-15 year olds, but on the other hand I wouldn't have any problem with them watching porn either, so my opinion might not be very useful to you.

My favorite is when a movie with swearing in it is rated R, but a movie filled with fantasy violence is PG-13. Wolverine's endless parade of bloodless claw killing it the X-Men movies are pretty funny actually. I was waiting for him to decapitate some one and then show a fully healed over stump for a neck after wards.

Well ... I am chicken when it comes to watching or reading about very violent stuff ... guess I had a sheltered upbringing. Even at this age ... when I come across some online news article that explicitly details (and thanks to ratings greed, they all do) physical or sexual violence ... I quickly skip to the next article before the brain registers anything.

I am probably the only one who shuts his eyes when the media replays the scene with the second plane hitting the twin tower (I accidentally saw that footage once and was pretty shaken).

Yup .. I know ... I'm a basket case

I watched "Three Days of the Condor" ... several years ago on some cable channel ... and don't recall the violent scenes. Perhaps they cut all that to make room for the commercial breaks.

PG-13 didn't exist back then so it was going to be either PG or R.

Given the subject matter, violence and one sex scene (which didn't really show anything IIRC) PG didn't seem appropriate.

Now you'll see worse on network television in prime time, except that they might now show the blood.

You could always rewatch it and determine for yourself if it's suitable. If you liked it might be worth seeing it again.

Then again, kids these days.....they tend not to like movies that are not based in CGI or 3D.

It's mostly due to the shootings/language and the fact that the sex scene is just bizarre. "hold woman captive in her own apt at gun point then seduce her and have sex" and he's the good guy.

pretty good movie though, i liked it.

I also watched a lot of R movies when I was younger and spending quite a few nights sleeping on the floor next to my parents bed.
