Thunderbird 1.0 has arrived and is free :)

I find that Thunderbird didn't work that well at home. We had switched from Outlook with SpamBayes but Thunderbird didn't seem as user friendly when dealing with spam or even something as simple as running rules so we switched back to Outlook (which is a royal PITA to do since Thunderbird doesn't give any "export" capability).

For those who want to pop (yahoo,hotmail etc) try this freeware. It supports most popular webmail accounts
like gmail, yahoo, hotmail, lycos etc. I have been using it under linux with thunderbird for 3-4 months and it works great so far.

The big difference between Thunderbird and Outlook Express is the built-in spam filtering. OE doesn't have any; you must use some third-party product. I haven't been using Thunderbird long but so far the filter has identiifed the same things as spam that Cloudmark Safetybar does. (Cloudmark, a spam filter for OE, works great but costs money after a 30-day trial.)

Otherwise, Thunderbird is very much like OE but feels a bit simpler and clunkier; that may change when there are more extensions for it but there don't seem to be many good ones yet.

One of my favorite things on both firefox and thunderbird is that you can use mozilla backup and create a full backup in a matter of seconds. when you restore it restores everything - links, toolbars, pop settings, folders, emails, everything. Very useful, and easy. The spam controller is well thought out and designed as well... Very simple, yet very powerful.

I do use hotpopper to check my legacy hotmail account as well.

Beyond all that -- Outlook Express is just as big a target for spyware and nastiness as IE6 is.....

Bah...TI-99/4A with a 300 baud modem on a phone line that was split 3 ways was even more painful.

But I learned how to program at 12...
