Thunderbird 800 temperature with Chrome Orb

Hi,

I just assembled my new computer including an ABIT KT7-RAID mainboard, a Thunderbird 800, and a Chrome Orb for socket A/462. The thermal sensor is on the mainboard beneath the CPU socket.

The wierd thing is that temperature rises up to lower 90s (in degrees Centigrades) and usually stays around mid 80s. With no heavy load at all. And the measurements are taken from the BIOS screen.

Placing Chrome Orb on this CPU/MB combination was already a bad experience (capacitors block heat sink, Orb does not fit properly on the core and needs too much pressure to stabilize).

Any suggestions or ideas to illuminate this situation, and what may be going wrong?

The mainboard itself has many other bugs... don't even want to talk about them...

You did say near 90C, THAT IS WAY TO HIGH & DANGEROUS,buy a TaiSol heatsink/fan for $13,this is a great cooler my T-bird 900mhz is at 42C right now & never goes above 45C(I`ve two 80mm fans),the model you want is Model CEK733092 1.1GHz AMD approved.Btw if your CPU is at 90C that is at the very limits,is your temperature sensor reading right? Anyway I would try a Taisol or check your chrome orb is seated right.

It is wierd because when you start to slightly load the CPU (not even at 100%) temperature quickly rises to 60-70-80 degrees Centigrades.

I disconnected the fan power of the Chrome Orb, and the heatsink got very hot. That means there is thermal conduction from the core of the CPU.

So, I just don't get it. The CPU will be dead very soon if I don't find a solution.

It`s possible the chrome orb is not making proper contact with the CPU,so try again & make sure it is seated properly, you would still get heat on the Orb even if it is not making good contact,If you have to change & buy a different AMD Socket A approved heatsink/fan do so,the sooner you fix the overheating the better chance your CPU will survive. One last thing check the CPU is getting the right voltage.

I think the Chrome Orb is making a proper contact with the CPU core. That I can understand from the image of the core that has been touching the pinkish substrate (thermal gel?) on the bottom of the Chrome Orb. I will try to buy and use some additional thermal gel from Radio Shack.

The CPU voltage is 1.80 Volts. Should be normal. Tried decreasing to 1.70 V but the heat problem persisted.

Any original ideas for what else can be done?

Found the problem:
Haven't removed the plastic piece on the heatsink thermal compound. That was preventing proper heat transfer from CPU core.
