Take a look at THG VGA charts, especially the quality benches. The biggest difference between a 4200 and a 9800pro is going to be when you start using AA and AF. The 9800pro can be several times as fast.

Note, a 9800 pro is going to be a lot faster in most games but sometimes you may not notice much of a difference at 160fps if you?re already doing 80fps in a lot of your games. Also, some games (like some of the charts on THG) are very cpu limited so a faster graphic card in some games won?t make any difference at all (depending on settings and if you don?t have AA/AF on.) The performance increase can vary a lot depending on the game.

Its big. I saw a big difference going from a Ti4600 to a 9700P. The 9800P is supposed to drop to $199 SOON. Sell the Ti4200 for $75. $125 upgrade.

if your CS frames drop below 20, i can safely say its not your video card. even a geforce2 hase no problems keeping above 30 or 40 FPS in CS, let alone a geforce4...

Hmm Gues sI should hae put in there we run a custom mod its a crazy mod with shadows and crap , but wo it looks good!

regular CS I get about 40 <-- guess that was before my upgrade to the p4 3.06

Maybe I should just get a 21 inch monitor instead

You're running a P43.06 and a gig of PC3200 with a 64MB Ti4200? You're *choking* that rig with your videocard (unless all you play is Q3 and CS).

I went from a 128MB 4600 to a 9800Pro and I saw a noticeable difference (*especially* with AA/AF enabled). You're talking like double, triple the performance with your upgrade in most situations, and 4-5x more in stressful games with AA and AF on.

How can anybody say that it's not a big or worthy upgrade? He's got a P4 3.06 running, and he's only got a 4600? Get the 9800Pro, you'll see at least a 50% increase in performance, which to me is a huge upgrade.

i agree when considering a ti4200 is more than enough to handle the games Scar13 speaks about. the money would surely be better spent paying someone to get the current system running correctly.

People keep saying to wait for the next gen cards, but if ATI's R420 rollout is anything like the R300-series one, the first card to come out will be an uber-high-end piece of equipment priced way above where the current cards are.

If you're looking at a 9800XT right now, I'd say to wait, but I don't think 9800Pro prices are going to drop much (if any) until the "mainstream" R400 cards are widely available (IMHO).

His video card is terrible compared to the rest of his system. If he's looking for an upgrade that will massively increase performance, this is it. If $220 is too much to spend, perhaps a GeForceFX5900 (~$180) would be more appropriate, as it's also a big step up from his current equipment.

It will offer a tremendous increase in overall performance, but my honest advice, just wait, if you're going to spend that kind of money, wait until the new cards come out, and drive the proces of todays high-end cards down.

Thansk guys!

fyi system runs great, but lacks in the video section. Every test I have run has come out with high marks for the cpu and data transfer. The hard drive could be a little faster, but it runs great for what I need.

Ill wait for prices to drive down more and see what turns up. I have 250 to spend on a vid card so Ill hold off.

I jumped from a Ti 4400 to a 9700 Pro and saw a big difference, but then again I'm a picture quality whore so I always run games with 4x AA 8x AF at 1280x960 or better. But even w/o enabling all the goodies, the 9800 Pro will still blow away the 4200 and it's incredibly priced right now at just over $220 at most online stores.

is it 220$ better to see a HUGE increase?
Most definitely. I paid full price for a 9700 Pro and it was more than worth the upgrade from a Ti4600.

Horizons? I doubt a video card in the world will help you. I tried that game, no offense but I thought it was crap. From all I learned your problem is on their side, not yours. All the ghz and video upgrades in the world won't matter when you are connected to a crappy server.

vfibsux,

Really? I have every option turne don and to the max and get 20 twon to 50 in the open.

In large scaled fights it drops to 10 or less thats why I need a new video card.

He's spending $220... the new highend cards that come out will be in the $400 range. Or you mean buy today's cards tomorrow? Even then, it's not guaranteed the price will drop immediately, only when the market starts to get saturated with the new cards will it.

I say NEVER wait for tomorrow. There will always be something better over the horizon, so get what you need today, use it today.
