Ti4400 to FX model. Worth it?

I have a Ti4400 and am considering upgrading to a newer video card, like an FX model. Is the performance increase worth the cost? If it's only incremental, I may pass.

It's hard to tell since Anandtech doesn't bother to include ancient (18 month old) video cards in his benchmark comparisons anymore (which kind of makes them useless, imo).

Does anyone know of a site that has benchmark comparisons for new and recent cards?

Thanks

>>> unless it is a FX5900

What makes the 5900 worth considering, given your advice to wait for the next generation?

And is it me, or has the Anandtech reviews shifted their comaprison focus from old / new to ATI / Nvidia? I can't imagine why the FX reviews completely ignore the previous line of Nvidia cards.

Thanks

the 5900 ultra (and possibly the 5800) is the only card that will give you a significant performance boost

if you were to buy a 5800 non ultra, you can o/c it to ultra levels and would give you roughly the same performance as a 9700 pro. i think the 5800 non ultras hover around 270 if i am not mistaken

Considering the same upgrade, I'll prob. settle for the eVGA 5900 for $249

It's not worth it unless you get a fx5800 or better.

That would be a great upgrade imo. It's funny that the fx5800's are still running around $249.

Tomshardware (gasp) have a massive round-up of graphics cards past and present, and despite what people say about the site it's not all THAT bad, and has just about every card ever made compared in detailed benchmarks.

Graphics charts index.

In the index you'll see benchmarks for mid and high-end systems.

I wouldn't upgrade to anything less than a 5900. That $250 5900 actually looks like a reasonable deal, if you're only considering nVidia. If you'd like what seems to be a better overall card (faster DX9 and prettier AA), look into a $250 Radeon 9800.

You could get a 5900 non-ultra and try to OC it to become an Ultra (difference between the two cards is 50MHz core speed -- and the ultra has 256meg ram).

What games do you play?

I would stick with the Ti4400 and wait for new games like Half-Life 2 to come out, and then upgrade in the winter/spring to a future generation card.

I'd stick with what you have now and upgrade when your card can't do what you want it to anymore, such as run a new game.
