Is the 5600 ultra faster than a ti4400. I don't want to spend more than $200 & only considering nvidia.
I want to replace the GF2 GTS in one of my systems
, then I'd move my 4400 to the slower system and keep the 5600ultra in my personal sys.

Also will the 5600ultra be better than the ti4400 in HL2 when it comes out ?
BTW the 5600ultra would go in a 3.35Ghz system w/ 512mb.

Thanks for the info.

Regards,
Jose

the new version of the 5600ultra is faster than any GF4, and that is very evident when you turn on features like AA and AF. For future games it is going to be a better card. It should run HL2 nicely. If you get a 5600ultra, just make sure it is one with a 400mhz core speed. They also overclock nicely for some free performance increase

I'd go with EVGA. They got good customer support. I saw a PNY at Compusa. I don't remember the price though.

Like rickn said, the 5600 ultra rev 2 is faster than a ti4400 in all cases. There are better choices for about $195 that I would choose instead of that card, but I know there are some who will not buy an ati card.

Of those three brands you mentioned they should all be fine. I would look at warranty and what is included with the card to decide which one to buy.

Look into a $230 5800, as well--it should be much faster than a 5600Uv2, with the same features, for only a little more. Plus, most seem to be able to OC to near-Ultra levels easily. I'm not sure a 5600Uv2 will be noticably faster than a 4400, and it's certainly not a smart $200 upgrade, IMO. Why hobble such a powerful system with a mid-range video card? I say go for a 5800 if you must stay with nVidia; if you're feeling adventurous, go with the faster and prettier $250 9800.

Where can you find a $230 FX5800 card ? pricewatch doesn't have a listing for that card.

If I could find I probably would get the 5800 for $230. Is Nvidia set to come out w/ a new line of FX se cards ?

Jose

Why buy a 5600U for $230 when you can get a Radeon 9800NP for $235 and flash it to a 9800P?

jose, search this forum. Rollo was linking a $230 Chaintech 5800 a few weeks ago.

As for any SE cards or games, you'd be wise to ignore them if you're a gamer.

Googlegear was running a deal for a fx5800 for $230 a few weeks back, which imo was a pretty damn good deal. Unfortunately I believe this deal is now dead and I haven't seen another one for this cheap.

also If you want a card that will perform well in half life you need to wait for the next generation of FX cards that will not be out for a while. The PS 2.0 engine in the FX cards are not all that great and unless valve can make a way for FX owners to remove the shaders and use an older dx8.1 engine than you will have bad performance with the 5600 (even the 2.0 version)... also the 5600 ultra does not look very good compared to the 4600 right now... If you have a 4600 and will only buy nvidia, then I would wait for the 5700 which will be in the $250 range but will have awsome performance and hopefully fix some of the bugs that are plauging the current FX line. if new shader games are not important to you then get 5600 ver. 2 they are about $230 are available now and will give youi great performance on current games with 4xAA and 8xAF...

Is the shader performance confirmed to be this bad? Basically, I've heard the 9800 pro is better, and I've also heard that this is bs and/or doesn't really matter. Myself, I'm looking at either a Gainward 5900 or a 9800 pro. I like NVidia and love Gainward, but if the performance in HL2 is going to be bad or not look as good as ATI, that completely defeats the purpose of my upgrade.

there are some very good discusions going on at B3D about this... it apears that if the shaders are written to use full DX9 path (fp24/32) and nvidia does not disable fp32 in there drivers than yes the performance tanks even the 9600 pro beats the 5900 ultra. (this is done with a current game BTW Tomb Raider 6 AOD)

even when the CG path was turned on the 9800pro still beat the 5900 ultra buy a large margin.

I agree gainward is probably one of the best Graphics card makers out there, I have the 750 myself, but nvidia has sliped and it might just bite them in a big way.

even at aquanox they are looking into this shader issue with the upcoming aquamark3. as it uses Tons of shaders in its rendering. They have not said whether they will support downgraiding to fp16 yet so the jury is still out, also untill some more games come out that use ps 2.0 we will have to wait to see just how bad nvidia will be affected and if they can sneak around the issue in there drivers.

BTW, for the record I think that fp16 looks good I have not seen enough of either though to really tell. Also with the trilinier filtering mishaps that nvidia has been mucking up in there drivers I am starting to really get sour on them... I hope they start turning around with this next hardware pop. (5700)

Valve devs recommend a 9800, and there are rumors of ATi's next card, the 9900, as being bundled with HL2. Which do you think will be the smarter choice for that game?

When is the 5700 suppose to ship ? If it's within a 1 month then I'd wait.

That was only at Googlegear that I know of.
Now $258 and up at Pricewatch. Sales pitch should be:
FX5800: When you absolutely, positively only have $258 to spend on a video card. Or are too dumb not to buy a 9800 for less.

I dont think that 200$ into an Nvidia upgrade over what you have now is a very smart upgrade. I'll respect the fact that you dont want an ATI card, even if I can't begin to imagine why.

However if you want to an NVIDIA card, I would wait for the next generation, they simply aren't a good price/performance chice right now. It makes it hard to get a good deal when you limit yourself so much, so you either have to wait, or pay bigger money IMHO
