The tick doesn't technically make people allergic to meat, but rather to a sugar molecule found in red meat known as alpha-gal.

I never even heard of these things till a few years ago, it seems we have them here now. They sound pretty scary. That, and giant hogweeds, that's another thing that's new. Those things will make you blind by simply brushing against one by accident. Freaking scary stuff.
