i like how they rate detergent by number of loads.

i then like how the cap is 3x larger than the recommended amount, so that anyone who doesn't look for line number 2 uses all that detergent in half or less the number of loads.

My favorite is the 2 for $1.28 sales when the original price was 64 cent each.
My dad was in the grocery business all his life, you wouldn't believe the things they do that actually make people buy more.

burger kings first few years of "combo meals" were actually more expensive than buying the parts separately. i used to tell them that every time i went to one (i knew the owner of a bunch of them in mesa) and wouldnt buy the combos until he finally changed the pricing to be an actual bargain.

I remember that.

A couple more tricks of the grocery trade:

Milk is one of the top sellers so it is located so that people have to walk through the store to purchase it. That way they will see other things they need.

Displays are placed in the way of the cart so that you have to take time to navigate around them, again so you look at more items.

Food kids like is put within their reach so they can grab it and run to mommy.

Grocery stores get paid for product placement. Want your item at the end display ? Pay for it. Want your item at eye level ? Pay for it . The grocery chains map out stores like its a charge by the foot billboard ad.

Optical Illusions are your friend. People perceive different shapes as being more or less. So if you need to sell less product for more money. Change the package shape while the contents are less.

 My gf was doing that. She got the triple concentrated All, and was filling the cap to the top. I pointed out to her that she was only supposed to fill it about 1/3 full and she got all pouty on me.

Yea I like how all these labels have "Special, 33% free" - but how is that 33% free if the label ALWAYS has that? You're still getting charged for it.

Can't blame supermarkets for maximizing revenue...their profit margins are like 1-3%

You think that's bad. We were at Target not very long ago to get some shampoo and noticed they had a temporary price cut on the stuff my wife uses. When we lifted the temporary price cut paper and saw the original price we almost died laughing because it was the same damn price! Shameless.

I hate that.

the cup needed for my detergent is fricken huge. but there is a line (have to really look to even see it) that is like 1/3 of the way up.

though if you actually read the packaging it says where the line is.

i remember like 15years or so ago. KFC changed the chicken breast. they said it was 33% larger. well yeah it is but its like 70% bone now where it used to be like 5% bone. you used to get a lot more meat on the breast.

Wrong, Kirkland detergent is made by Huish. I hauled shitloads of that stuff out of Salt Lake City from the Huish plant.

Kind of like Kmart and their "70% off all fine jewelry" gimmick. It's always been 70% off. Off of what, I don't know.

You read the directions.

Was there make up sex?
Put those pouty lips to good use.......*slap!* Damn wandering mind!

Modelworks - another trick of the trade: Rearrange the stuff sometimes so people have to search around for 5 fucking hours to find something that's been in the same place forever.
Walmart loves to do this - they change the merchandise arrangements every month or two. People browse more to find what they need, and so will buy more stupid shit.

The Giant Eagle grocery store near me rearranged itself quite a bit. Fortunately, stuff there seems to remain pretty static otherwise. They replaced the video rental place with a pharmacy, and a lot of heavy refrigeration equipment was moved. I guess I can forgive them for that, since it wasn't just a "Let's rearrange the place to piss off customers!" move. But good god, they really shifted a lot of stuff around. Aisles got merged, products just all over the place compared to where they had been for several months before that.

I'm usually the sort of shopper that marketers hate: I know what I need, and that's what I get. I stopped keeping a budget of my grocery expenses, because they were almost the same every single week.
