I do it all the time, but you might want to hear what the fashionistas here think.

Menfolk have been wearing ties since long before button-down collars were invented...and still wear them with shirts that don't have button-down collars.

How the fuck is this even a question?

Are you still trying to be dressy? Or are you trying to be an ironic hipster that wears a skinny tie and fedora along with board shorts and some sort of polo shirt?

Please don't do the latter.

Simple question and I have an answer now, thanks... and for the fuckwads trolling, I'm going to a wedding. I hardly ever wear ties.

If you're wearing a jacket, you absolutely should never wear a button down shirt.

As was beaten into you above , button downs are less formal (sporty), and are typically worn without a tie, perhaps with a sports coat and slacks but not a suit.

I once was told by an employer that they would not hire people with button down collars because to them it was a sign of laziness. Was an interesting take.

Button down collars should never be worn with long ties. And unless you are 50+ you shouldn't be wearing a bow tie. So you should never be wearing button down collar with a tie and jacket.

That is the most idiotic thing I have heard. Collar preference has to do a lot with one's style and facial/body makeup.

These rules are more for evening/formal occasions. The button-down collar is a business man classic look.

Most don't realize the purpose of the button-down collar (to not flap up on horse) is also a benefit for the 'working man'.

At night I agree, there are much more elegant collar looks that fit really well with a coat as well.

No. Its not. They are not classic or traditional. Unless you are a polo player they are neither. Button down collared shorts, are fine in non business or non evening settings. But they aren't appropriate in either of the aforementioned settings. I dont know where you are getting its a classic business attire.

Hey...I like to wear "Button down collared shorts" for business attire. It makes anyone a true baller.

I wear ties to work everyday. None of my shirts have button-down collars. So no, it isn't necessary.

On another note, if you do wear collared shirts, you may want to invest in a good set of collar stays. A good metal set will keep the collar from curving and will weigh it down enough to not need to be buttoned down.
