Your going down a very dangerous road of thinking now. So in your example we should profile people. I can think of several examples of using one's race and stereotype as a example to take action.

I have no problem with profiling people. Since we apparently don't care about our swiss cheese borders, then people who shouldn't be here already are. Now, reason must come into play once they figure out yes this is a clock he shouldn't be charged at all. He never claimed it was a bomb which if he did then charges would be appropriate.

No picts of actual "clock", no actual charges, full on usual make news out of a nothing local event media spin.

What is the point in taking your made in 20 min "clock" to school?

The actual events, the non spin story may never come out.

do tell, what do you think is the "actual story"?

Perhaps something like this.

There's entirely not enough cynicism in this thread (and the Internet in general).

Remember Balloon Boy?

Remember Tahera Ahmad?

What if the kid's parents are some attention-seeking social justice warriors and it was their idea to make the thing beep constantly and draw attention to itself? What if it was their idea to bring it to school around 9/11?

Even when I was his age in 1994 and I was doing Heathkit electronics and taking classes, a clock / timer was a single, boring electronic component. I was more interested in the "build your own PAPER clock!" magazine ads.

Keep an open mind.

I hope that this kid enjoys his free trips to NASA, Facebook, Google, and the White House. He just hit a PR goldmine!

where is the bomb part? what is sopposed to go boom?

- Anyone else might assume it's the big transformer.

- Behind the giant segmented numeric display?

- Lift a flap at the bottom of the case...

Yeah. Let's just ignore it and dismiss it as "not possibly a bomb" the next time some kid brings that to school around 9/11.

Anyway, can we get confirmation that's really a picture of Ahmed's clock?

As the ultimate source, I honestly point to the media. These people see circuit boards and wires with a countdown timer on stupid cop TV shows... And honestly, how does a teacher, school admin, or standard cop even know what a REAL bomb looks like? It's quite apparent things like confuses minds that are inferior (school teachers, traffic cops).

35 years ago I started the Electronics class in my High School and the first project was a digital clock from a 555 Timer chip.

Sad to see in 2015 that Electronics class is considered Terrist.

Only if you look Middle Eastern or have a Muslim sounding name, I'd imagine.

Good.

about now the school and police have to be scrambling to fix the major fuck up.

Why should they? According to many on here, they were totally justified because he was brown with a scary name and his clock had confusing wires and numbers on it.

The school has a right and duty (of care), to protect the pupils/staff and others from harm.

If much of the world was at war with Germany, again.

Would I/we be racist, if we were extra careful around German looking/speaking people, until the war is over ?

No one ever thought it was a bomb. If they did the Irving PD, Irving SWAT, and Irving bomb squad would have been on site immediately and the school would have been evacuated in short order.

What I find amusing is they claim they were following proper protocol in handling of the student even though they didn't follow protocol in responding to a "hoax bomb". Proper protocal with dealing with a hoax bomb is treating as if it were a real bomb.

Keep in mind the standard for schools and the police these days is "looks like a bomb", "looks like a gun", "looks like drugs", etc. It doesn't have to actually be any of those things for there to be a serious issue.

There are two separate questions.

The first is was the original English teacher, right to be suspicious of the situation she found herself in ?

I would say YES. Because there have been many, recent terrorist activities, including in the US.

It is quite reasonable, that the teacher can't necessarily tell the difference, between a real electronically timer activated bomb, and a pile of electronics with a timer/clock, noises and what may have looked like parts of a bomb.

The second question is. After she contacted the first person about it, which seems to be the principal. Then others, including the Police. They may not have handled the situation, correctly ?

Presumably the full story has not come out yet. Any parties that have not performed well, may want to keep the exact details quiet.

tl;dr
Up to the point that the teacher, contacted the principle about it. I am happy that, that was correct (given a typical English teachers, probable lack of experience with real bombs and electronics).

But later, it may have been a mix up or something. People tend to start acting a bit weird, when stories of a possible Islamic terrorist, has a live bomb, inside a school, at the moment. Are being reported.

I should mention Irving is a very diverse city. Irving has a Mosque, and Islamic Center, and a private Islamic school. Everything was peaceful until the current Mayor was elected and started making anti-Islamic statements. Since then the Islamic entities have been getting all sorts of hate mail and threats on a regular basis.

Not Irving, but another north Texas town was fighting against an Islamic cemetery not that long ago.

Then, at worst, there should be a short investigation and that be the end of it. To extend this into a suspension and potential criminal charge is asinine

There was NEVER any belief it was a real bomb. If ANYONE AT ANY POINT thought it was a real bomb the school would have been evacuated and the bomb squad would have been the only one handling the bomb. The English TEACHER DID NOT BELIEVE it was a bomb. If they did they wouldn't have picked it up.

They really cannot claim they followed protocol with the student when they didn't follow protocol for a hoax bomb.
