We went to a Timberland outlet store today, and they had some FANTASTIC deals on jackets. I found a GoreTex windbreaker/shell for $100, regularly $300! All jackets, including some heavier winter ones, were 50% off, and they had already been marked down some.

If you are near any of these outlets and need a jacket, it might be worth the trip! I couldn't believe I was able to buy a nice GoreTex jacket for a c-note.

Got a pair of waterproofed brown leather boots, GoreTex also. Pretty cheap, at $60. You can step in a water puddle almost up to the tongue and not get wet!

Some of these big companies make items especially for outlet stores, these items are not the same quality as thier regular brands...these outlet stores have become big business!
if you think about it, why are they trucking thier merchandise to these out of the way stores anywho!!
everything is a scam!!!!
just depends how much u get scammed for!!!

I got my northface goretex for 150? Which is stylistically and name-brand wise WELL WORTH the $50 extra for whatever timberland can make.

My comment was in reference to outlet stores in general. Sure, I could drive 1 hour to my local outlet mall, and probably come up with 50 "hot deals" on various items, but what would be the point? Its just wasting space on these boards and my reply here does as well.

tydas, I thought they truck those slightly mis-made(forgot the exact term) items to the outlets. At least that's what they do in the tommy outlets. It is generally not a bad deal, but the quality is definitely lacking compared to the mall versions.

It's so hilarious how everyone here is so name-brand specific. There's the Plextor vs. TDK crowd, the Quantum vs. Maxtor crowd, and now, I guess, North Face vs. Timberland.

For the record: Colgate is suck. Crest rocks!

ah, I think all gore-tex is made by gore technolgies so is should be about the same for protection no matter who stamps their name on the jacket that uses it.

I got a Sportif Ice Climber Goretex shell for $45 at a recent DSports.com clearance sale.

It's true that TNF is in vogue among non-outdoorsy types nowadays and that they moved their fabrication off-shore, but they still make some quality stuff (mountain/denali jackets, etc). In addition, TNF gear is frequently available at ridiculous discounts, but at full retail price, I would definately go with another manufacturer such as Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, et cetera. They really should make their logos a little more discrete -- I imagine that it's a little embarassing to be a walking TNF billboard.

PS, how is Goretex a "rebaged Thinsulate"? Please enlighten.

I'm agreeing with thirdrail, way too popular on people who don't need it but they still make nice stuff.

<< Everyone knows that Goretex is just rebadged Thinsulate. >>

Monty Burns, you've got your fabrics mixed up.

Thinsulate is a polyester type material that's packed together to, so they say, offer double the ammount of insulation (and therefore warmth) compared to the regular stuffing for comforters, blankets, poncho-liners.

Goretex, on the other hand, feel almost like a latex lining. Its porous enough to allow air to breath through (therefore, letting your body's moisture out) but not enough to allow water in.

If you need further explaination, check THIS LINK and tell me why the hell they'd use two similar fabrics in one boot.

I actually like North Face stuff because it actually works - I put my NF stuff to the test all the time. I'm not saying North Face is the best, but it is definately quality stuff.

Ever thought that the reason why everyone wears it is because their clothes are actually comfy and look good?

I'd say that $100 gortex at outlet is so-so deal.
Don't forget outlet sells grade b, irregular, last season, overstock stuff.

I didn't notice anything odd about my "Factory Seconds" Timberland shoe from the Tannersville, PA outlet. I thought it was a great bargain at $40 for a 2nd shoe I could wear as a junk pair.

The North Face makes some of the most overpriced stuff I have ever seen. They incidentally have an outlet at the same place we went, but they knock off about $20 from their outrageous prices -- gee, thanks. If you buy North Face gear, you really don't like your money all that much.

If you want great regular priced deals, check out REI's line of gear. I have been using an I-frame backpack that I bought there back in 1989, and it works great. It's definitely no frills, but it has top notch construction and is fine for 3-5 day hikes with a decent load. For $100 12 years ago, I'd say it's been worth it considering how many trips it's taken.

I don't particularly care who makes the label which goes on the gear, and I frankly don't give a damn that my new jacket says "Timberland" on it. I also own a pair of pants from them which were on a terrific discount ($15), and a pair of leather boots that were very cheap ($30) -- both on clearance from department stores. I would just as soon buy a Mountainsmith pack over REI, or Vasque boots over Timberland (my hiking boots are Vasque -- Sundowners, HIGHLY recommended), or a North Face jacket over Timberland if the price were right. In the case of North Face, their price is almost never "right". Overpriced yuppie gear if you ask me. I laugh my ass off when I see their packs for sale because you can buy a Mountainsmith, Gregory or Arc'Teryx for the same amount and receive so much more.

For jackets, GoreTex is GoreTex since it's legally controlled by Gore Industries. When outlets sell mismanufactured stuff, they almost always, in my experience, mark it as such, and they might be legally required to do so (I know London Fog marks theirs as such). However, the "poor manufacturing" might be confined to simply one stitch not being completely in line with the seam. My London Fog ski jacket has one small stitching error behind one cuff -- almost so small you'd never see it. It was discounted well over 50%, and it's in perfect shape after 9 years of use. Not bad for "outlet crap". None of the Timberland stuff was marked as being "rejects".

Wozster: The answer to your question is "yes", they are.
