500 GB HDD of some kind. CPU is overclocked but the graphics card is not.

Target Use:
1) Gaming – Warcraft, World of Tanks, Flight Sims
2) DAW – Reason 8 connected to multiple devices
3) Visual Studio, Photoshop, MS SQL and typical Office products

I run a VMWare server in the basement for file storage, development server, security system and media server. All the major rooms have Cat6 drops feeding back into a HP ProCurve switch/Cisco RV110 router.

I was pumped to go to a 4K gaming experience until I started reading the forums and shopping for monitors. I have never had a cutting edge display and would love to play the next WoW expansion at max everything. I waited for the GTX1080 to drop, and then the Broadwell-E thinking this was the path forward but now I am not so sure. I wouldn’t mind having something capable of experimenting with VR over the next 2-3 years. Usually I build rigs for a 5-6 year run with a graphics card upgrade somewhere in the middle.

Speak to me regarding the error of my ways. I am still reading on 4K and trying to understand if I can get away with a single 1080 or I have to run SLI.

I did [post=38337758]a couple of builds like this[/post] recently. Hex-cores and higher are the future, but hex-cores also have individually slower cores, unless you overclock a lot. So...

Don't get X99 unless you're sure you'll overclock. If you're not sure, get a 6700K.

If you do go X99, I don't see the point of the new 6800K over the older 5820K. ... Memory speed also doesn't matter so much on X99, since you have 4 channels.

At least 3/4 of these things tell me you should go for a 6700K.

The thing to understand about 4K gaming is you can get a 120Hz or higher 2560x1440 monitor, or a 60Hz 4K monitor, but you can't buy a 120Hz or higher 4K monitor (yet). Your particular games don't appear to need the highest frame rates, so I think you could go with a 60hz 4K G-Sync monitor.

I'm not even sure you need to go SLI with those games. But, in any case, the hard "HB" bridges are very hard to find right now. So you might as well start with one card and see what happens.

Edit: Oh, a couple of notes about your case. It probably doesn't have USB 3.0 ports, and I'm not 100% sure that big Noctua will fit in it.

I read that thread and your post earlier. It was one of the things that led me to wonder whether 4K was really practical at this point. I am heading out to check out some monitors locally if I can find a few. There is a Frys close to me, and Best Buy of course. I just want to see how much of a difference it actually brings.
