Tripple bonus question: What was the topic of the thread that caused the creation of the Off-Topic forum?
Quadruple bonus: Who were the main participants in that thread.

Winner!!!

Way to go, rahvin. Good memory. (And he's right, it was Harvey who coined the term - which was ironic, because he was also a major proponent of the lawsuits.)

Now, as to the triple and quadruple bonuses, I'll disqualify myself - since I am part of one of the answers.

Good to see some of you old-timers. That's really why I started this thread.

LOL! How about those items that were free (or money back) after rebate + ValueDollars that earned more ValueDollars?

Yes, that was classic.....earn ValueDollars by sending ValueDollars. It's no wonder Value America went under. Many times, I got back more ValueDollars than I had spent. Then there were the "surveys" they ran that gave you more of them free. Got quite a bit of hardware back then very cheap by using those Dollars.

The dot.com boom was fun while it lasted.

I joined back in 1998 but after the database crash of 1999 my joined date says 1999.

I vaguely recall this issue, but I thought it was with Samsung Monitors.

I remember the forum choices were rather limited. I joined because of the hardware reviews like motherboards.

I do remember the whole GUTB ordeal very well.

I was one of the original WMC. I had a few confrontations with Russ and Red. I went by NoGoodNamesLeft back then. I believe Russ just referred to me as NGNL. Those were the days.

Rio,

As I recall you are a Rebel fan. How did you like this past season?

I actualy just tossed last week some of the notes and web page printouts from the WMC episode. I had a smile on my face while thumbing through the stuff, then gladly tossed it all.

Yea those day's are history and realy the turning point for internet retailers, for the better.

Good to see some of the 10/99's

I like the Rebels, but I love Alabama. So this past season was torture.

I remember..

I didn't participate, so I don't know any of the specifics, other than it was a Hitachi.

Hah! My roomie back in college scored one. The funny thing is our OTHER roomie who clued us in on the deal didn't get it.

It was a Hitachi Superscan 731 IIRC. Man...a big ass bowl shaped 19" monitor. Back then...I think it was '98/99ish...it was awesome for 150 or so bucks.

Order stuff from ValueAmerica, Buy.com, Mercata, Accompany/Mobshop, and any other company with a deal going on.

Resell stuff on Ebay to idiots who almost pay retail.

Signup with Paypal on different accounts to get initial signup money, then refer myself for more. Then send money to myself up to my credit limit to get credit card rewards.

install AllAdvantage and use software hack to pretend I am surfing 24/7. Get checks in the mail for this.

Do short surveys on Green?? (forgot name) and get movie tickets, gift certificates.
Any other cash surveys quickly click through answers for the goodies.

Order a movie and ice cream from Kozmo (with new email and cc each time) and have it delivered within the hour.

I was king of the dot-com era. Lived like one too.

Okay, I'm having too much fun seeing the old timers, so I'm bumping this up again.

On the Value America subject, I visited my brother-in-law a month ago, and he still has the Toshiba DVD player that many of us bought with the Value Dollars. That was an unbelievable deal. And remember the 5 free dvd's that came with those initial players? It seemed every dvd owner in America had those 5 movies - StepMom, Lost in Space, 6 Days/7 nights, Lethal Weapon 4, and Stargate. You couldn't trade those in any local used movie store for more than 50 cents!

Ahh the good old days. But these days aren't so bad either.

800.com - Christmas 1998 3 DVDs for $1

Reel.com - once a week they would have DVD's for $12.49 PLUS price match against competitors PLUS $10 off coupon PLUS 10% eBates.com PLUS free shipping PLUS my credit card rewards.

Buy.com - remember back in the day when popular DVD titles were $14.99 and abundant $10 off $30, $20 off $100, and $30 off $150 coupons combined with eBates.com and free shipping promo's.

WhatsHotNow.com

BigStar.com

MobShop/Accompany

ValueAmerica

Mercata - Bought a crap load of stuff from Mercata, my original ReplayTV, Norelco electric shaver, DVD Player, luggage (3 piece set for $66 free shipping), microwaves, cordless phones and at least 300+ other items.

Shopss.com - If I placed my order 1 week sooner I would have scored the P3/500 for $99 damn damn damn I'm still pissed about that.

PointClick.com - For a period of 3-4 months people were earning around $1,400 per month tax free. Oh how I could use that money today.

No wonder the "bubble burst"

<--- 0+ DVD's and counting.

Ahh yes, the infamous five. I actually recently just sold off StepMom, Lost in Space, 6 Days/7 Nights, and Stargate. I gave Lethal Weapon 4 away years ago since I already had it.

Actually, Butter was a legendary thread. I REALLY hated that thread (though I never threatened to cut anyone's tongue out over it).

The creation of the Off Topic forum was from a different topic. I'll give you a hint: Netopia was one of the participants.

Religion would have been my first guess.

It was religion, though the specific subject eludes me.

I just threw out, while packing, about 300 "free frappucino" coupons I'd printed out back in '99, or whenever. I must have used/given away another 200. I've never been able to drink frappucino since.

I remember making about a zillion "first" orders from places, to get the discounts. QVC.com and some pharmacy or another, and didn't Amazon have a first-time discount? BabyStyle did, and I remember buying a lot of toys (free) and donating them.

ToysRUs first year, got free stuff because they missed the promised Xmas delivery date.

The pet store deals: I gave Xmas presents of cat books, fish magnets, dog notecards & whatever one year, all for free or nearly so.

And so on.

I was working at an internet-consulting place, and for a while I hired e-commerce experts based on whether or not they knew what "stackable" meant. If their eyes lit up and they said "Staples" or "Amazon", they got the job .

I don't even remember myself, and me and Joe (Netopia) were the two that kept it going so long that the whole freaking board had a hissy fit. I believe it had something to do with the fact that I can't accept that there is a magical sky wizzard.

rahvin is right (except about the sky wizard part, but nobody's perfect.)

rahvin and Joe were the ones who would kept it going so long. Nowhereman was heavily involved. Harvey and I both were involved in complaining that it was "off-topic" for a computer hardware site, and I forgot who actually suggested the creation of a new forum.

I hope ole' Netopia comes around in this thread - he'll get a kick out of it.
