Clearly 5 Mbps isn't good if you're paying Comcast for a 50 Mbps connection.
Coincidentally, I just had a Comcast tech out to my house today. I'd been having some flaky connection issues, with the modem often rebooting and signal levels out of spec. The guy was awesome. First, he found that the port I was connected to at the pedestal was bad, so switched me to another one. Then found that the wire buried in the yard was also bad, so he replaced it. Then he replaced all the connectors, cleaned up some of the outside wiring and installed a junction box on the house where there hadn't been one before. He said it was essentially a new install, but no charge.
I took the advice of someone in another forum in order to get the tech out. Disconnect your modem, call Comcast and tell them that your service is down. They'll fiddle around for a few minutes checking things, then will say "Yep, it looks like you're down alright. We'll have to send out a technician."
