- I never really went on a deep dive of Gamergate despite hearing it tossed around quite a bit, so I finally did and holy shit.

People need to chill the fuck out and go touch some grass

Yeah, Gamergate was the catalyst for the rise of the alt-right entirely, although they'd been being primed for it as far right white supremacist groups had been deliberately targeting gamers for years. They had only limited success until Gamergate though.

But don't think shit like "PC Master Race" came out of a vacuum or some simple joking.

So. He said he was only planning to attack Nancy.

Wouldn’t planning attacking Nancy be another charge?

And so it goes...

Attacker of Paul Pelosi David DePape sentenced to 30 years ( 30 years for assault and 20 years for attempted kidnapping, which will run concurrently.)

I guess his excuse he hit Paul because Nancy wasn't there and so his plan was ruined didn't carry much weight. Crazy conspiracy nut.

He came all that way. What, did you just expect him to go home without hammering ANYONE?

While I'm not opposed to the sentence itself, I do find it a striking as ever that one assault can garner 50 years of sentence, whereas another earns so little.

Totally agree with the sentence but it's a shame he was tried in federal court. For sure King Orange will pardon him if he achieves the presidency.

My recollection was that he was a sort of homeless character in Berkeley, which is right across the bay, a 20 minute train ride. He's a stupid character.

Thanks for not falling for that ruse.

Berkeley to Pac Heights is more like an hour plus by transit. It's one of those trips nobody makes unless they absolutely must or are crazy would be murderers. Other examples include: Manhattan to Brooklyn. To the west side of LA from anywhere else in the metro. Etc.

According to the article, he still faces a trial this summer on state charges of attempted murder, burglary and assault.

I grew up in West L.A. Before freeways existed. You used to have to drive downtown on streets like Venice Blvd. or Washington Blvd. It does not take an hour to get downtown. Well, I don't live there anymore, but I doubt it. Never been to Pac Heights.

I lived in Hollywood, then Venice in the mid '70s. From Hollywood to downtown LA was about 3 or maybe 4 miles. It took 45 minutes by bus during rush hour.

I lived in Hollywood and Venice, both in the 60's. I had a car. Traffic wasn't so bad, is my recollection.

Yet the 10 is a pleasant jaunt compared to the 5 or the 405.
Reminds me of the opening of Office Space, which is about as good as it gets for comedy.

I pity all the people stuck in traffic. I zip by them frequently on my bicycle. I haven't used my car for 23 days. Poured some fuel preservative in the tank a couple days ago.

I will never understand cityfolk’s desire to live in the city. Why subject yourself to all that bs when you dont have to. No matter where you are at on the planet, from the suburbs, there is usually a high speed train that will get you to the heart of a city within an hour if you want to go.
But on the daily? You can keep that trash I like my skies open.

High speed trains are tools of Marxism.

Have you been back? Homeless folks wandering the streets everywhere. Truly shocking!

I lived in Hollywood and Venice, both in the 60's. I had a car. Traffic wasn't so bad, is my recollection.

I grew up in the SF Valley (Granada Hills). Moved back to CA in 2008 and now live in south Redondo Beach.

LA traffic is fucking horrid now. It was bad enough in the 70s and 80s when I grew up. It's many times worse now. It's no longer rush "hour." All day is rush.

Now its a 2 hour ordeal to get downtown on the 110 or past west LA going north on the 405 ANY time of day between 5:30am and midnight.

My wife and I ski quite a bit and drive north to Mammoth or Tahoe or east to visit friends in AZ. We have to leave no later than 5 AM. Any later we add 1 hour to our drive time. Later than 6am we add 2 hours.

Inevitably we return in the afternoon on Saturdays from skiing or AZ. Hitting LA around 1-3pm. Going to Mammoth at 5am gets us there in 5 or so hours. Getting home takes 7+ hours because we hit Sat afternoon traffic.
And this will break your brain: Lancaster/Palmdale AND Santa Clarita/Newhall/Saugus are so built up part of the delay on Sat afternoon is caused by backups on the 14 through those towns.

But as soon as I hit LA it's stop and go on the 405 from the 101 interchange all the way to the Rosecrans exit.

One bright spot about where we live is it's 20-30 minutes north to LAX on PCH/Sepulveda avoiding the 405. So out of state trips are easy. We use a car service to drop us off and pick us up at the nightmare that is LAX.

Side story: During the first lock downs of the pandemic, LA was a ghost town. We'd drive up to the poppy fields of Antelope Valley or Angeles Crest or north county San Diego for day trips in under an hour. 85MPH the whole way and very few cars on the freeways midday. It was fucking surreal.

Reprise...

Edit: I popped it in last night (just to see that opening scene) and watched the whole thing again (7th time I've seen it). It's an 89 minute movie.

This video explains lots about it:
