Time to find a new bank.

I need to find a bank in the Los Angeles area that offers Free Checking, without direct deposit, and has good service.

The only bank I know of is Washington Mutual, and after how they have treated me, I refuse to open another account there.

Help me please!

No one else offers that as far as I know.

I have my BofA account that I've never paid a dime on and only had direct deposit for 6 months. (I've had the account for 2 1/2 years.)

Now I've got my air miles check card and I'm very happy with them.

Go for a credit union! I hate banks, they "fee" you to death and their service generally gets worse with time. My credit union is nearly fee free, gives me a free $1000 insurance policy, has no minimum requirements, and has GREAT service including online banking!

I agree, credit unions are much better than most banks.

Not everyone likes direct deposit, believe it or not. Anyway, I third (fourth? ) the Credit Union notion. If you find the right one, they are like gold compared to the banks. The only drawback I've found with CU's is the limited number of branches and ATM locations. Otherwise, they rock.

They'll treat you like a human being and they have the BEST rates.

I prefer to have at least two bank accounts. One is with a CU and the other with Citibank. The citibank online portion can't be beat. THey have almost every company you can think of to pay your bills online--free. Plus, there's c2it (does not require a citibank account) that allows you to get cash from anyone anywhere and transfer funds between different bank accounts. Citibank rocks.

The CU I have sucks when it comes to online, but the other perks are excellent.

In SoCal nothing beats BofA. If you do direct deposit. Free online payments and free checking.

If you can maintain $1000 in your bank account, BoFA checking is free that way also.

I'd suggest a Credit Union. I joined with one locally here last year, they are friendly and treat you well. Someone usually says "hi" whenever I walk inside.

Been using BofA since 1987 and I've always gotten great service.
You can get the minimum balance fee waived if you talk to them too.

I haven't had any problems with my bank(Southtrust) but they are not in LA and I doubt the ever will.
