Time to say buh-bye to HBO?

I've been thinking HBO isn't worth paying $12 a month for anymore. Sopranos are long gone, Curb your Enthusiasm season just ended a few weeks ago (am I the only one who watches that show btw? No one ever talks about it, it's pretty damn funny). Deadwood appears to be done. Since HBO almost never has any good movies on, I can't think of any reason not to cancel. Anything good on HBO coming up? They don't have nearly as many series as they used to. Band of Brothers was long, long ago. I doubt anyone here can make a good case for HBO. At least I could substitute it with Starz which seems to have better movies, and more variety. Only thing I don't like about Starz is they use dubs for all of their foreign movies. I believe all of HBO and Starz is in HD now on DTV, so that doesn't affect the decision.

I bet lots of people have been canceling HBO lately?

I can always resubscribe temporarily when/if Curb comes back.

curb is gone for good so i would cancel it. Only thing left is the last season of The Wire and however much longer they can milk Entourage.

Yeah, Entourage is the only reason I keep HBO around but, we'll see how long that lasts. I have noticed too that everytime I'm looking for something to watch, there is NEVER anything good on...until I get to Starz...which is, of course, the only channels I DON'T get...*shrug*

I say ditch em!

From wiki

Season 7

While a new season has not yet been confirmed, a New York Post article dated November 5, 2007 mentions that Larry David is considering doing the show for 2-3 additional years, and has been quoted several times saying "Curb will run longer than Seinfeld did" .[1] In a recent interview with Richard Lewis, he says Larry's tone on the phone is very hyper and energetic. "This usually means he has come up for a story arc for a new season.[citation needed]"

The final season of The Wire starts in January, so you definitely have to hold out until that's over.

I've been cable-free for two months now and I'm perfectly fine.

There are enough movies at the library to keep me entertained. It just doesn't make sense for me to get 120+ channels when I'll only watch a dozen at most, and never more than 10-15 hours of TV a week. Although you have to wait a little bit for it to come out, it's much cheaper to rent an entire season's worth of a show than it is to get cable for a month... probably cheaper to buy a lot of them, too.

After "The Wire" is done we're definitely dropping HBO.

We just kissed Directv good-bye for a few months. One son plays basketball, the other is on the swim team. Practices means no one tunes in before 7pm, and even then, it's homework time. Then there are the games and meets that we go to and watch. (Or rather, I work at the swim meets - and get paid to watch.) My wife and I hardly ever watched anything other than re-runs. Even though it's relatively cheap entertainment, we realized that we're paying for nothing. So, for 3 months, buh-bye directv.

And, in the meantime, I'll think nothing of continuing to purchase movies that interest me. I can't remember when it occurred to me, but I realized that for us, it was cheaper to purchase the movies that we wanted to watch, rather than pay for HBO, Starz, etc. Heck, get HBO for 2 months, record every movie that's of any interest to you, and you'd only have to purchase about 1 movie per month that's less than 10 years old for the next year before you missed anything.

i tried to drop HBO and Showtime last month after Comcrap jacked my bill up another $20. It would have saved me all of 5 dollars to drop HBO so I only canceled Showtime. They have all these stupid packages that they offer its hard to figure out whats cheapest since they don't post the price of each package alone.

I would love to dump cable right now, but so much of the time when I do watch TV is spent watching ESPN, DSC, or the History Channel. If I could pay $10-15 a month for those channels, I'd be set, but that won't ever happen.

I had HBO a couple years ago, but there wasn't much I would watch on there anyway. I've been recently getting the DVD's to various HBO shows off of netflix, which is pretty good.

But then how will you get your weekly dose of middle-aged, white, suburban angst if not from Tell Me You Love Me?

I added Showtime a couple months ago after the wife finally nagged me into it. I'll have to admit she was right. Don't tell her I said it though.
