Time To Upgrade

Yes, I have a 9800 Pro APG that i'm keeping for a while since I just got it last OCT. I've never been a over clocker but it would be nice to know it there if I wanted it.

One other question. Will I be at a disadvantage since the nForce boards are all Nvidia chipsets and I have a ATI video card? Thanks for any info you guys can provide.

MSI neo 2 platinum that I have (and many others ) is AGP + 939. I know its not as good right now/$ compared to 754, but the upgrade path is there for dual-core

No, Ive heard that driver conflicts may exist, but this is unlikely, and outweighed by the drastic improvements on the nforce3.

Unless you're a hard core gamer (which you don't appear to be because you don't want to upgrade your video card), your system seems like it would be fast enough for most uses. Use the $300 to buy something for your house or some new clothes. Or just treat yourself and your SO to a good meal.

markfw900 i how do you figure there is a future for dual core. if that is the mobo i am looking at it has a nf3 250 ultra chipset of which i have heard nothing of having support for dual core. i have heard rumors of dual core on 939, but i just dont see the nf3 chipsets supporting it. if im wrong feel free to correct me though. JE78 i highly doubt you will notice any "disadvantages" by using a 9800pro on a nvidia board and i am sure there are many builders here that can justify that.

ATi and nVidia mix very well. Come on now. Think of how emminently popular the Asus A7N8X line and the 9800 pro were. I built several systems for family members with aforementioned products. No problems. They are also both part of the HyperTransport Consortium. You people need to lay off the crack-pipe with your conspiracy theories.

754 will not have dual core.

I was only suggesting that you get a 939 board and cpu, so that when dual-cores come out, it would be an option. I got my MSI 939 board and 3000+ winnie for $305. Now it is $286 (or $336 with a 3200+)

It's not an entirely bad Idea. Obviously from this post he's the kind that upgrades instead of buy whole systems at a time, so 939+agp would be alright in his case. Toledo is going to rock.

I was using nForce2 + 9800Pro a while ago and I had absolutely no problem running that. This is just a stupid theory.
I'd say get a Socket 939 mobo + CPU because that will provide great upgradability compared to 754, since dual cores are 939 (regardless of chipset) and next gen video cards are still coming in AGP flavors. And it's not gonna cost you much over 754.

Thanks guys, it looks like I have alot to consider. I'd really like to get a 939 mobo and CPU and I like the looks of the MSI and 3000+ combo on Zoomfly. Although I'd really like to get a 3200+ with that mobo so maybe i'll spend the extra cash and get it. This is probably a dumb questions but whats the advantage of having dual LAN? Any other suggestion please let me know, you guys have been alot of help.

One advantage of Dual lan is using your PC as a router in a home network, that's what am doing. The internet cable goes to one lan port, and a network cable comes out from the other to the second computer.
It's not really necessary though for the normal user.

I use a modded Xbox as a NAS on my second lan port on my AXP box.

Thanks guys. Right now i'm sharing my internet though a router to one other computer. Is there any advantage of using the onboard router??

I've decided to choose between these two setups. Unless of course someone has another suggestion.

AMD 3400+ Socket 754

Something minimal. But it will provide a great upgradability for the future. But then you can upgrade the mobo and CPU in the future if not now. What do you use your PC for?

Gaming mostly. I don't run too many high end games though, well until Battlefield 2 comes out. I Play HL2, RCT3, BF1942, BFV, and a few games that are a year or so old. Upgradeability is something I want which is why i'm pretty sure i'm going with option #2.

If gaming then definitely #2 since an Athlon 3200+ is way better than P4 2.5Ghz in games.
