I have a question related to the 924/944. I know that some of the purists might take offense, but how feasible is it to do a motor swap in one of those? I would think that something like a F20C + Turbo or MZR 2.3 Turbo would be a great match to the car, and be tremendously less maintance intensive. I say this because I once worked with a guy who did an LS2 + tranny swap into a late 80s Lotus Esprit, and literally everything about it worked perfectly, and it drove incredibly. I also know someone with a V8 Volvo 240 Wagon
There are a number of LSx swaps running around; it's apparently pretty easy to get the traditional old SBC into a 944/924S chassis, though I think you lose power brakes because there's not enough room for the booster. IIRC the weight difference isn't all that much.
Anything other than the LSx engines though and you're looking at a lot of bespoke work.
The transaxle can make things a bit different too since you can't just swap in a new transmission easily. Basically your choices are the stronger 944 Turbo transaxle or being careful with the stock 944 transaxle. Rebuilding or custom-building these transaxles is expensive.
