As a serious audiophile and long time music lover...

I would love to go back in time and not listen to music so loudly. I thought "bah...old fogies just can't appreciate good sound"

My name is spidey, I am 35, and I suffer from tinnitus.

Turn it down guys. I can push 120 db with my 2 channel system and it sounds great. But it's too loud.

Turn it down. There is a comfortable listening level and it is around 90-100 db for short sessions. Crank it to 100 if you want, but at your own peril and loss of hearing.

I'm trying to warn you guys here. Please, please, please heed my warnings. I wished I had known better, other wise I wouldn't have ruined my 'golden ears'

I know "it can't happen to me", but it does and it will.

Same here, I have Tinnitus because I used to be a DJ in a disco (back in the 80s) and I played LOUD (I mean it LOUD) music, and I wish I knew better.

PS, thanks for the info

Good advice, but then there really is hope for those that took it seriously a bit too late

Preliminary gene therapy is expected to be possible early next decade, which could restore hearing for the most part and simultaneously treat the most common cause of early tinnitus. If your tinnitus has spread to the nervous system however that's gonna take a bit of brain rewiring. Possible a while after I'm sure

... which reminds me to mention that if you have significant hearing loss it's important you keep the auditory cortex stimulated to prevent developing neural tinnitus. That means either wearing hearing aid or equalizing the speakers to make up for the loss while playing music; at least once in a while.

I'm NOT loving my ears ringing out of nowhere. Just out of nowhere in a quiet setting....rinnnnnnnnnnggggggg for minutes at a time.. Around 15 Khz. Sometimes it is constant.

It sucks.

Protect your ears fellas. It ain't no joke, I thought it could never happen to me. It did. I listened to music too loud.

Bad part is if you get into hi-end audio you can listen to 110 db audio without fatigue....but it does it's damage.

It's not just loud music. It's loud anything. I rarely cranked my music and only went too two shows w/o ear plugs (granted one of them left me "club deaf" for 3 days), but I have tinnitus. I blame a lot of it on mowing the yard w/o any hearing protection for a good 13 years. Anytime you are around something loud (whether it's music, power tools, or using a hammer in a confined area) you should at least wear ear plugs (if not full over-the-ear protection).

My tinnitus usually isn't that bad, but I need white noise around me (like a fan going while I sleep) to drown it out. Sometimes though something (some frequency I assume) will "trigger" it and I'll get this head splitting tone in my ears for a few seconds that will literally stop me in my tracks because of the pain. Those suck.

acute onset of tinnitus is nothing to shrug your shoulders about. it could be serious. make sure that if you didn't get it because of something loud the night before or something that you get checked out asap.

Did you use A-weighting? That should give you a more appropriate measurement. 10Hz bass at 100dB might throw off the reading raising concern where there shouldn't be much; for example.

Yep, A-weighted for possible damage measurement, C-weighted for calibration

My ear drums or that bone inside my ears vibrate when people make repetitive noise such as knocking on wood. I use headphones extensively and I try to keep it at 1/4 the volume.

I've had fairly mild tinnitus for at least 15 years, fortunately it hasn't gotten any worse. I only really notice it in a completely silent room. I deal with it and just sleep with some noise in the background (fan, computer etc.) I've been good about not listening to loud music since this started in my teens. It makes it tough to go out because a lot of bars either have the muisc cranking or the crowd noise is over 100db. Looks kinda dorky to pop in earplugs in those situations (I know, who cares, but they don't call it peer pressure for nothing.) I have custom molded ear plugs to take with me to live music venues. I think a lot of it is genetic though, and I do my best to avoid loud situations but I don't sweat the occasional noisy bar.
