Just charge 15% more for food. BOOM! problem solved.

Old way,you go to a restaurant it cost 60 bucks for two people tip being optional.

New way raise the price for the same meal to 74 dollars. The 9 dollars is put on the tally for the servers paycheck.

no tipping involved no more confusion no more whining everyone wins.

Food served at a restaurant would be priced like an ITM options contract. The Intrinsic value being the food price, the extrinsic value being the services part.

The greedy servers would just expect a tip on top of that. People are so trained to tip servers that at least some of them would do it anyway. Once that starts the servers would feel entitled to a tip again, if they didn't already.

Tips are based on service. Adding it to the food price negates the whole point of tipping.

How are tips confusing? Good service = good tip. Lazy/obnoxious/stupid server = bad tip.

But then there is the argument of:
I buy a hamburger and a beer for $10, give a $1.50 tip.
I buy a steak and wine for $20, have to give a $3.00 tip.

Did the waiter/waitress do more work for the steak and wine than they did for the hamburger and beer?

Sigh, here we go again. This will be another 20 pages.

On a side note, I always do tip 20% after tax regardless, but I understand both sides of the argument. I honestly think news sites love running these because it's one story that sparks instant responses from everyone.

I'm the same way..I pretty much always tip 18-20% unless the service was really bad. Even then it depends on how busy it is, and I take that into account and give the person the benefit of the doubt. The problem is you have people on the other side of the spectrum that don't tip much if any at all even if the service was great.

I tip what ever I feel like the service was worth. I get a 14 dollar haircut I've always tipped them 5. Depends what your getting. As for the food the more expensive the bill, it still depends how you were served. Why pay more money when the service sucked just because you ordered more expensive items.

I was under the impression many restaurants around the world pay their employees hourly (not sales-based). I read an article a few years back that the going rate is about 6-8 euro an hour plus maybe 100 euro a month in tips.

If you think service is bad now, start paying servers fast-food level wages.

Adding 15% to the menu prices chases away potential customers (the ones who go in expecting not to tip), that is why it has not been implemented here.

Nah just pay them a decent hourly rate...

Never had bad service in Australia/NZ/Europe/Caribbean, service was always excellent and no tip was ever expected.

How are you getting $74?

Food servers are not commissioned sale staff and are not entitled to 15% of gross sales, that is insane.

Have you seen the tons of threads here about people complaining here about why they should tip a waiter/waitress when they serve you food?

People make it confusing. Instead of trying to figure out a percentage or whatever just tip a set amount. Normally I just give 5-6 bucks more than what it cost and say to keep the change. So they get 5 bucks + whatever the change is. At a nicer sit down restaurant and a night out where I spend more time, I might give more like 10-15 bucks. I just play it by ear based on the situation. It's funny to watch some people pulling out a calculator and writing down formulas and stuff on a napkin just to figure out how much they should tip. Never realized a restaurant visit required Calculus experience.
