Tips for OC'ing

I just built a new computer with the following hardware:

Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Extreme
Video Card: Asus ENGTX 560
RAM: GEIL 4GBx4
CPU: Intel I7 3960X
CPU Cooler: Corsair H70
PS: Corsair 1200 Watt
Case: Corsair 800D

Hi Don Karnage,

it is true that it might be overkill in that I'm not a gamer. I am however involved in a lot of video editing, etc. I also had a little extra money and wanted to push the build a bit. This is my 5 build in as many years. I do enjoy building my own as opposed to buying and as such, I've never really overclocked.

I hope that you can forgive my naivety and spare some of your wisdom.

You've certainly future-proofed this rig. You have left yourself with the ability to handle more vidcards when you can afford them.

Nice setup. For o/c the CPU i'd recommend isolating. Don't start off tweaking too many settings. As posted earlier, raise that multi then run some tests, see where you are at with temps. I think you can expect 4.4-4.8ghz without a lot of trouble.

Have you tried using the Asus AI suite II? Your mobo likely has an available auto overcock you can try to see where it lands.

Get CPUID hardware monitor to check temps and vcore. Get CPU-Z for more information.

If you are new to o/c'ing, read read read and read. Don't set settings that you dont know what they do until you know their effect. Some settings are confusing and have meaningful impacts on that expensive CPU.

Go to youtube and try to find someone with a video how to with your mobo of one close with same chip sets and maker..

it seems like your jealous... why should you care what gpu he has?
He wanted the horse power... theres a lot of people who are greedy about cpu prowess... what if he did distribute computing?

Why would you pick on a guy because his cpu is overpowering... what next u want to start with me?
My liquid cooling gear alone most likely costs more then everyone entire PC whose posted in this thread.

Do i need it? no... did i want it? yes... like how every extreme processor owner is... we get it because we WANT it.. not because we NEED it.
