Terrible advice unless he has big bucks. And, as it has been implied there are definitely price constraints. Any ring you get larger than 2 carats that we can assume to be in his budget will look like total crap in regards to cut, clarity, and other metrics.

A good friend of mine's wives is friends with my fiancee's mom. This friend's wife also worked as a jeweler in the past. So, I went shopping with her. ANd She helped me figure out what I wanted, and helped find me something good for my budget.

My fiancee is not big into fancy diamonds, but she loves her ring a lot.

My .57 was like $1025 + ring setting ended up being $1300 or so after tax ... was happy with it, the diamond look pretty big too. I was researching them on bluenile for a long time, found the diamond I wanted, but Jared's here had a similar diamond, same cut, .05c less, GSI rated, blabla, better quality for a few hundred less.

This is her second ring too, first one was $2400 or so ... lost her first already, haha. My bad for not insuring it. This ring is far superior then the first one, as I actually knew what I was doing this time when looking.

10K gold is rather low grade stuff, it doesn't age as well as 14K.

However; it's stronger so for smaller bands can make the difference in durability over looking as nice over time.

For most 10K is a budget decision.

I like Costco for jewelry. My last three purchases were from there and my wife is very happy with it. With anything at Costco, you're guaranteed to get a fair price and not get ripped off. It might not be the absolute best deal but you get the convenience and Costco guarantee.

As for the ring, size matters.

Save the receipt. My coworker had his house robbed and state farm is only covering 2.5k (i think. might be slightly more). they actually cut him a check but now they're asking for receipts for stuff even the wedding ring, which was purchased 6 years ago. He said he bought it for 10k.

Shape - round
Carat - 1.01
Cut - very good
Color - D
Clarity - VS1

If I had to do it again I would drop the color down to G, drop the cut down to good, and keep clarity the same to make up for the price for 2 carat plus $10k more.

I don't know what the OP's budget is, but less than $10k won't get you anything decent.

Jewelry is never covered (over a few hundred dollars) unless a special policy was taken out, if that was the case then the policy is limited to its face value.

The problem with Costco is it's selling mediocre jewelry which is probably what 90% of people buy anyway.

Size does matter with this stuff...however; a smaller well cut diamond will look larger than a larger stone of poorer cut quality plus have all the benefits a great cut gives.
