Tired of tires

I'm looking for a new set of tires for my 2011 Hyundai Genesis Sedan. 235/50r18
Right now I'm wearing Pirelli P Zero Neros, and they've been ok but a little loud considering this is more of a luxury sedan than a performance sedan. (I didn't have them put on in the first place) I'd like price per tire to be under $170, and they will be used for all seasons. Here in Alabama that means almost never under 20F. The guy at the shop said I might could use Nexen 5000 Plus but I'm not sold on that idea.

These are the current top 3

Vredestein Quatrac 5 - More expensive, but great reviews. Not many miles driven though, fairly new to the US.

General Tire AltiMAX RT43 - Cheap, highest treadwear rating but reviews say they wear around 30k. I do wear tires pretty quick so I'm not sure it could be worse than the P Zeros.

Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring - Also cheap, reviews are all over the place though. Maybe poor QC?

Honorable Mention
Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 - Good reviews

Do you guys have favorites on this list? I might be leaning towards the RT43

I am not sure what you mean about the review on the cooper. They seem to be a solid tires. I have them and happy with it. They are not quiet nor noisy. I never really pay much attention to noise on tires as long as it doesn[t sound like a tank on the road.

The Quatrac 5 is an "all weather" tire, not the conventional all season, which means it is biased toward winter performance, although good year round, unlike a true winter tire. I am considering them for my next purchase, because I live in Minnesota. Probably not necessary in Alabama. The RT43 is a solid choice. I would shy away from Cooper, simply because a lot more reviews are available for the bigger name brands. I would also investigate the Continental Pure Contact. It is the top rated touring all season tire by Consumer Reports and also rated highly by Tire Rack.

I would stick to a mid/high end tire from one of the major manufacturers (Continental, Pirelli, Michelin, General). Dont think you can really go wrong with any of them. Goodyear is good too, but I think they tend to be a bit overpriced.

Looking at tirerack, the Pirellis wear quickly because it looks like its a summer tire with a 220 wear rating. The tires you are looking at now are grand touring tires and in general they wear much longer and are generally quieter in comparison.

I have a Hyundai Genesis Coupe on 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 (I know its a totally different car compared to the sedan) but I ended up with the General RT43 and I think it does well (quiet and wear seems fine). I was also looking at the reviews saying it wears out fast, but I think that is more isolated to heavier cars like minivans.

These blow your budget a bit, but they are quiet and long wearing:

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+
I'd love to blow my budget but these 4 tires are coming as a result of a terrible alignment, that's a result of one mismatched tire (one P Zero blew), that's a result of cracked front control arm bearings. I don't want to cheap out, but as long as they'll last up to about 30k-40k miles I'll live. That's about 2 years of driving for me.

A fair few newer reviews are low ratings. May just be bad reviewers though rather than bad tires. I'll be keeping the Coopers in mind.

Ah, I didn't catch that. I'll check out the Continentals too. My main thing is quiet with enough grab to put down all the power in a straight line as long as it's warm and dry. I'm not a performance driver and the P Zeros really are too loud for my constant highway cruising. Gets very annoying.

Hey sweet car man. Even if they're different they're both still special. I will say my car is only about 200lbs shy of our 2009 Odyssey, so weight could still be a bit high. Funnily enough, they have similar sized tires too. Would you say they're good highway cruising tires?

One caution. I would avoid the Continental Pro Contact, although a lot of places seem to still be selling them. I have those on my car, and while they are decent, they are an older model still being sold at a relatively high price. They are OK in normal use and the rain, but not very good in snow (not a problem for you probably). In any case, I think the RT43, PureContact or ExtremeContact are better tires and cost no more, or could be cheaper.

I am partial to Continental Extreme Contact. I had a set of DW, and the newer ExtremeContact Sport on my Mustang and absolutely loved them. I just recently (yesterday actually) put a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on my Audi....but those are a little more than $170/ea.

Hmm, well if the Michelins are a deal breaker, maybe you'd be willing to consider all season variety of Pirelli that is much quieter than the summer tire:

P Zero All Season Plus

I know that having a bad experience with one product can turn one away from a manufacturer, but that's not always entirely rational. These are rated almost as highly as the Michelins, even quieter but with slightly poorer dry braking (still high in class).

I think the Conti DWS he posted are generally better regarded, and cheaper.

Edit: I see those Mich are +... must be a new revision, not sure how that compares.
The Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 would be my 3rd choice, but really I don't think anyone could go wrong with any of the three that I've mentioned. General and Cooper are cheaper for a reason, they don't place as well in tests. Don't know about Vredestein at all.

P.S. OP, the Generals are supposedly noisier than any of the tires mentioned in this thread, so you might want to scratch those off your list.

I put the extreme contact on my Legacy and really liked them. I have their big brother on my Forester. On the Legacy they had some noticeable noise when stopping, but IIRC they were pretty quiet otherwise. I don't notice any noise from them on the Forester.

Edit: The ones on the Forester are the True Contact, which are the touring version. They are about 100x better than the POS Yokohama Geolanders that came on it.

Edit 2: When my Legacy was totaled the tires had about 15K on them and were still at 9/32 of tread (IIRC, the inspector listed them as brand new on the total report). The True Contacts on my Forester are at 18K and have 8/32.

I think the Extreme Contact are a very good choice as well. I just didnt mention them because I was talking about tires which I have researched extensively for purchase for my Altima, and the Extreme Contact does not come in the proper size.

I've had the DWS a couple times and they are excellent tires. Last time they were out of stock and I had a flat and couldn't wait and got DUNLOP SIGNATURE HP XL and they have worked out pretty well. Had them about a year. 255/35R-18 for me.

Here's an update. Ended up with the RT43s, and they're great. Only put about 20 miles on them so far, and it's not been on the highway at all, but they're nice and (very) quiet for now anyway. I can't really comment on smoothness or grip too much because 1) it's been raining and 2) I got the tires on right after getting the front control arm bushings replaced, so the ride is way better anyway.

I will say, with the alignment fixed, control arms back in order, and brand new high-quality tires on this car it rides really really nice, way better than it did when I bought it 20k miles ago. There's a ton of broken pavement near my house that would make the whole car shimmy before, now it just glides right over. I love this car.

Glad you like them. I am seriously considering them for my Altima. The tires I have are OK for now, but definitely will need to replace all 4 before winter next year.

On my second set of General Altimax and the seconf set is indeed one of the General Tire AltiMAX RT43's/

Got roughly 50k out of first set and replaced due age of tire and some cracking that was happening - Again, that was age of tire as we only do about 6k a year on the car.

Second set has about 25k on them thus far. I've been bad about rotating so the fronts are a bit more worn than the rears. Either way, they last long enough for me and regardless of price they do great in all conditions and most importantly are great in the rain.
